What the *beep* was the deal with this movie. How this even got greenlit is totally beyond me. Reasons it was *beep* ..

1)No way the car would be THAT far down off the road. Especially given the trees.

2)I can buy that the dog was his dog and acted as a guardian angel of sorts but what the *beep* was the deal with the woman. I mean she wasn't even in the car and he kills her.. yes she's an illusion but why kill her. Lame ass way of making us think he robbed the bank.. lazy writer.

3)The black guy taking the money made us think what was going on.. yet again an illusion.. but why, he wasn't a part of the robbery.. another piece of lazy writing with no point to it other than make us think.. very cheap!

4)When he crawls off he goes downhill.. WTF!! A car crash isn't going to take a car uphill.. JESUS CHRIST! There's suspension of disbelief but that's taking the piss. The road is obviously above him.

5)After he crawl's AWAY from the car he somehow ends up back at it, even after he goes in the river. Come on seriously!?

6)The direction was *beep* too.. no suspense at all.. we knew he was going to get in an altercation with the lion but no build to it. Add to that the soundtrack didn't add to the movie at all.

7) Probably the biggest reason it's *beep* is we don't feel for the character at all because.. we think he's a robber.. then we find out he's not. THAT'S IT besides the fact that he had a dog when he was younger and he may or may not have a girlfriend/wife... BORING!!!

No guile or craft from the film at all. The only plus points are the acting of both the dog and Brody.

and also on the Radio they say his name that he was one of the robbers when he werent???!!! whaaaaaaat, movie is incomplete

What is incomplete is only the attention you should have paid about what was going on the screen. It wasn't his name, he only thought it was

No, the radio says two names of men at large but there is no evidence that either name was his. At the end we find out that Raymond Palazzo was the dead guy by the road. We never find out Adrien Brody's character's real name.

I agree with Steven on EVERY point, and the "beep" thing is IMDb changing any swearwords automatically.

This movie was such a piece of crap that if I knew what it was like I wouldn't have gone to see it even if someone had been willing to pay me $1,000 to do so. Why ANY actor would want to be in it and how such utter garbage can even get into theaters is beyond my comprehension.

"writers were snails" agree 100 per cent - I found this so boring, and every scene seemed to take so long to come about, even at the very end where he's putting his seat belt on... just get on with it and stop boring me!

I didn't think this was a good movie but you are so lying unless you are independently wealthy. $1000 for 2 hours? I'd go see Slaughtered Vomit Dolls for $1000. I'd close my eyes a lot and wear earplugs, but I'd go.

I agree with Steven on almost all points.

The whole story with the woman was confusing because they don't tell us hardly anything about her or what her "illusion" was trying to do.

I was frustrated that he never went all the up to the road in the first place, that should be common sense.

We don't know what the story of the black guy either or if he or the dog were "illusions" as well.

No movie I have ever seen made me want to keep fast forwarding like this one.... boring, and pointless. The IMDB score is justified.

Did you guys watch the same movie I did? Lemme shed some light from what I saw...

He wakes up not knowing who he is, just that he appears to be one of three men in a silver Chevrolet. He gets one name from the wallet of the guy in back, and another name from under his seat (which he ASSUMES to be HIS name, though it is not). When he hears the radio report, he believes that he was one of the three bank robbers.

The woman was a hallucination, conjured from his memory. Part of the reason I think he doesn't go up to the road is that it's a very difficult climb (though I agree it would have been best). He tries to find an easier route and begins to follow the illusion of the woman, trusting her to be a guide (in that sort of situation, you probably wouldn't think too logically either).

He gradually puts both stories together, and with handling the gun, merges the two stories to a false memory of him robbing the bank, with the gun, whereas the woman is the frightened teller that he convinces himself he's shot. When he apparently goes in circles, having followed and trusted this illusion, he decides that she's an apparition that is trying to torture him, hence he strangles and shoots her.

The black guy seems to just be a hunter and opportunist. He is not an illusion, as Brody clearly stumbles upon and finds his gear and cellphone, and later his corpse (the cougar or some other animal got him) in the cave. Yes, the cell phone belonged to the black guy.

I don't think the dog was an illusion OR his. It's clearly domesticated, though not collared. Perhaps belongs to someone living nearby and is keen to roam the woods. The final seen with the ranger seems to SUGGEST it was an illusion, but the dog wasn't with him on the road, and the ranger only took like 5 seconds to look around without calling the dog. That hardly proves that the dog didn't exist, though it seems silly to write into the story if the dog did exist, so I don't know and really don't care on that point.

This movie is getting horrible reviews on every site and seems most of the praise is only going to Brody's acting(which I agree is good), so we're certainly not alone.

Great analysis, perhaps the only sane voice in this thread.

*SPOILERS* ahead, naturally..

The fake memory part of the woman is very important to the understanding of the movie and to what the OP did not get. But I disagree to the dog part, I think it was meant to be Duke from his childhood ; also a hallucination, sort of a totem of his.
Bear in mind that due to the way hallucinations are used in this film, everything could be one, so technically there can be no plot holes and the script is solid. Even the distance of the car from the road could be a hallucination, it could actually be one fourth of that. The existence of the coloured hunter appears to not be one since he is the source of the cell with which he called for help; but wait, did he? We are not explicitly shown this -i.e. along with the officer that arrived- and the way the guy died is too implausible, so even he and his cell could be hallucinations. His mind went nuts after losing his memory and being left utterly helpless, so in the process of remembering a few fake memories and images were made up. Exactly how many is "up to the viewer" I guess.

I agree with what Tw0-B1ts said. It seems half of the people in this post did not pay attention at all to the movie. It's a lot better than half the crap coming out of Hollywood these days.

Really good movie I thought. Slow paced, but really puts you into his mind and what happened to him. Excellent performance by Brody.

Totally agree, mate! I tried really hard not to fall asleep, I even fast-forwarded the dvd many times, and texted my girlfriend to overcome it.

I forgot your the ultimate authority on what we should consider a great movie. 
Sorry it's not your opinion that rules the world, so get used to that idea once you wake up from your dream.

Any way this movie was complete tripe and didn't win any awards for good reason. Perhaps you could contact the director and have a award ceremony in your basement, I'm sure it satisfy your ego and your dream world at that.

I see where you are. I've been there a lot of times with movies in the past. But...for some reason, oddly, I once "got" the movie. I found no writing plot holes...only poor judgment on survival skills. If you thought it was crap, read my post, then, using your remote, skip to physical dog, cats, and flashback scenes.

Here we go...
1) the scene from the road where he looks down...if you took a hard right (assuming the cliff was on the right)...your car would find its way down. It would have flipped a bunch to get there, but is absolutely plausible. Him surving even with a belt is not plausible, though.

2) His relationship was dead before she set the parking brake in front of the meter at the bank. He knew it. She knew it. It took him being "CastAway" to know it deep down in his subconcious. There is no doubt when he returned, they broke up. (We've all been there sometime in life)

3) His subconcious knew there were three bad buys. His current mind rationalized he was part of them. Deep down, his subconcious knew this not to be true. At the wreck, there was one body unaccounted for. His mind filled this gap with an unknown since he had no memory of it. Unfortunately, he profiled. Being a product of the 70's, he still thinks someone not like him must be colored. He hasn'tcaught up to that latino is the 2nd greatest population in the US.

4) He went downhill because in the first few days, he only could achieve taking the path of least resistance. Only once the swelling and bruises subsided, could he contemplate going up such a challenge. Alternately, one might think he was in the frame of mind to take a runaway direction.

5) Yep, that sucks. No way that would happen. The rapids meant a very steep change in elevation which based on my answer to #4, would never make sense. I thought that immediately when he saw the car. I tried to say maybe everything in between was in his head, but that wouldn't fly. So...I'm editing river scenes out on my illegal Youtube edit. (just kidding)

6) The audience intended, in my opinion, was the mid 30's-40's couples at home who have a big screne or home theater projector. In turn, fitting this demo., I felt truly immersed in his situation without distraction from a string orchestra.

7) When it "hit", I immediately turned to my wife and said, "this is the first movie of its kind that the end made the movie versus the end ruined the movie". It then took me another 10 minutes through the credits to figure out the girlfriend relationship thing. So, it scored a 3 pointer for me.

8) I know you didn't state an eight...but I have no explanation for how big Brody's nose is.

Nit picking here, might as well not make the movie. Suspend your disbelief for a moment will ya?

Do you know the rules to hallucination? I don't think there are any concrete rules to how you would act. He was probably subconsciously blaming her because they had an argument right before the incident.

Once again, he's hallucinating. I've never hallucinated before but if it's anything like a dream, then you know sometimes you do weird things and you can't control your dreams.

Twilight zone going on here to let you know he is absolutely hallucinating. For all we know, he didn't go anywhere. For all we know, the moment he woke up from the accident to the moment he was rescued may have just been 20 to 30 minutes. Not days as he had imagined.

I don't think they were trying to build you up for a showdown with the Lion. I don't think that's what the movie was about.

I don't recall many movies where the twist at the end reveals that the bad guy is good. Most of the time, the twist at the end is that the good guy is bad. So I did not find that boring.

Just playing devil's advocate. :)
