Why does Tony give out his home address on live television?

I mean, that has to be the single most brazen, reckless thing a superhero could do. I get that Tony wasn't entirely thinking rationally, as we as human beings, often do when under duress or in the heat of the moment. But it's stupidly dangerous and arrogant for a highly public figure like Tony Stark to openly challenge and dare an international terrorist like the Mandarin like that.

That would be like Bruce Wayne going on television and flippantly or fragrantly telling the Joker or any other member of his rogues gallery where the Batcave is located.

What exactly did Tony expect was going to happen next? Did he not think that there was any sliver of a chance that the Mandarin was going to come after him in full force after Tony told the world where he lived?

Because Tony can be a real dumbass sometimes, you know?

Okay, obviously he's very intelligent, he may even be the genius he thinks he is. But he also lets his ego and arrogance take charge at time, and he can also let his concern for others overrule strategy and common sense. One of the reasons he made that announcement was to stop The Mandarin from using innocent hostages as bargaining chips, Tony wanted to move the pressure from the civilians to himself. Well, he succeeded.

Someone with his profile and home would make it impossible to keep it a secret anyway. I'm sure it was well known. His house overlooked the ocean for crying out loud.

Firstly, how the f*ck does no one know we he lives? He doesn't have a "secret identity" & it's not like his mansion is hidden or anything.

I think it was more like, "come get me" kinda invitation rather than giving away his home address.

Which leads to my second thing, how the f*ck do you invite a terrorist to attack ya & NOT prepare your home for an impending attack? He had a butt load of suits & tech. How the heck do you not fortify your place with those kinda resources?

In my opinion, That's actually dumber than giving away his address

I was wondering if Tony didn't prepare his home for an impending attack, because he in his mind, believed that the Mandarin was merely making empty threats. After what happened in New York City in The Avengers, where Tony helped stop a literal alien invasion, the Mandarin feels like small change in comparison.

Yeah, but The Mandarin was already established to be a threat. He blew up some places already. One of them being the mall or wherever Happy Hogan was at.

Also, I feel like someone experiencing PTSD & stuff would have like his security system up at all times.

Tony constantly underestimated his enemies

Tony's confidence has always been a defining characteristics — for better, and for worse.

It's what gave the character such an edge and helped set him apart from his serious-minded counterparts like Rhodey, Nick Fury and Captain America. However, Tony's overconfidence has nearly killed him on multiple occasions.

In perhaps the best example, Tony goaded the Mandarin into attacking him, challenging him in front of a group of reporters while calling him a "coward" and giving out his home address on TV. Not the smartest move.

Knowing the Mandarin to be a dangerous criminal who wouldn't take such insolence lightly, you'd think Tony would have at least prepared his home defenses for an attack of some kind. Nope. Either he believed the Mandarin was bluffing, or Tony was too overly confident in his ability to defend himself. Whatever the explanation might be, Tony's near-death at the Mandarin's hands illustrated his tendency to make his own worst enemy ... himself.
