Americans really that horrified about sex?

I'm from the UK and this movie confused me - is it an American thing to be so uptight about sex or just the people in this movie?! I know that it is a very Christian country but still this doesn't seem to govern the morals of everyone in the continent? I always thought that the term went 'No sex please we're British' but I think Brits seem to be far more free thinking about sex than Americans. I have been to the US but only Vegas where sex sells so don't think this counts lol so I guess I am going off the perception portrayed in movies.

I just thought they made such a huge deal about Olive having sex and I don't understand why - even though she didn't. It's only sex - the most natural thing in the world, and how we all got to be here. Two of my favourites quotes are -

Bill Hicks - "When did sex become bad - did I miss a meeting?!" and
John Lennon - “We Live In A World Where We Have To Hide To Make Love, While Violence Is Practiced In Broad Daylight.”

So is it a general consensus in the US or just the movie heavily exaggerating?

Yes, No, Maybe,

Thanks to your lot sending those pruritanical Pilgrims over here, we have a long history of being influence by that event. People use the sex thing because they believe it is evil, people who want to be in politics cater to them, and for several other reasons, cause that faction to have much more sway than they should.

So your average person, no. In the cities no.

However it does effect everyone. If one person in your school is some anti sex wait till marriage crusader, you will need to keep you activities a secret. The smaller the community the more pull these freaks have.

Why these people have so much power is beyond me. Williams Burroughs, in his Thanksgiving day pray says thanks for a country where no one is allowed to mind their own business.

They should be told to do what they want and leave other alone, but instead they influence things too much causing the cowards who won't stand up to them to vilify those who do live there lives the own way.

On a TV talk once they were talking about college girls who enter wet T shirt contest or flash their breasts and one woman said well don't they realize that if they ever want to be a lawyer or judge or whatever this would destroy their career if it was ever found.

Why? It should be meaningless, but sadly when comes to sex, homosexuality, what have you it is the tyrany of the minority over the majority. They act like somehow they will become infected if they don't stamp out sex and homosexuality.

This is too hard a question to answer here.

However to answer your question, your average person, no. Sadly because of the power of the radical moralistic(who's morals?)right many people are too scared to go agaisnt them.

It is a bad situation.

Charlotte - you could be right about Brits being less uptight than Americans about sex, since you live in the UK, being a Brit yourself, you know much more about the attitude toward sex there than I do. I do remember seeing Benny Hill years ago & realizing that his show was "racier" than anything on American TV at the time.

As for Americans, there may be some who are uptight about sex, but they really are a very small minority of Americans. It's usually the sickeningly hyper-pious ones that are uptight about sex - or at least pretend to be, because they think that makes them more seem more respectable & acceptable to society.

For more explanation of why I say that, read the long reply I just posted in this thread, in answer to a guy named Marc, about him thinking sex is "taboo" with people over 40 (that's actually pretty funny). My answser to him will give you a lot of background on Americans & their sexual attitudes & activities, over the last 50+ years.

I don't think so especially when our reality TV programming seems to be glorifying being a teenage parent and it seems to be perfectly acceptable for babies to pop out babies.
I mean unless all these girls are having virgin births then it's pretty well known that teens are doing it.

I think it depends on area more than country. I'm from the UK and most people I know lost their virginity at school aged about 14-16 and although it did often casually get around if someone had it wasn't looked at negatively (keep in mind in my town most people have children by 18!). But now I've come to University and because of there being more religious people for a lot of people even losing your virginity at 20,21,22 is still seen as a shocking thing, which I found strange.
