I literally almost just ordered this on Comcast for $7 but then read "Dubbed" written in the info section. Glad I caught that. I cannot watch dubbed films. Totally takes away from the movie.

Yeah I won't even go as far as to address those ridiculous comments, but being an American I personally prefer subtitled movies. I agree that dubs are somewhat distracting because I always find myself focusing on the mismatch of words and intonation to the actual movements of the actor's mouths and expressions. Guess it just depends on personal preference. I still can't wait to see the movie though.

Anyway, do you really think it is strange that people dislike the US since it has been the aggressor in so many wars the last century, and already two wars this century? And not only are the foreign politics worthless, but the domestic politics are seemingly disturbed as well. Health insurances... Need I say more? Also there are so many poor people (talking percentage now) in the US compared to other western countries it's ridiculous! Another stupid thing is that the american politics are designed so that only rich people may achieve any sort of high political status.
All in all: It's a f'd up country.

The hallmark of intelligent discussion, a patient individual, and one who's certainly not belligerent and in the wrong. America is a terrible imperialist nation that has the biggest ego in the world, and it's entirely unjustified. No country on the planet is perfect, but none have as many nationalist squawkers as America.

Typical responses to this will include "love it or leave it" and do not have any substance, nor will they even attempt to figure out why it is that many feel this way.

It's the topic of discussion right now, and you yourself highlight the reason people talk about so much in your very own post:

Yes, you were using this to make a different point, but this is why America is always discussed. Not because other countries have some weird obsession with it, but because it's almost always relevant. You don't hear about Sweden or Denmark meddling about in world affairs like America does. That's why people all around the globe discuss it so much.

Why? If America is so great, why is it unable to withstand criticism? People in this thread aren't running around shrieking "death to America" while unsheathing their swords, as far as I can see - so what's wrong with critiquing it?

After thorough examinations on how this country has acted throughout its lifetime, I don't know how you can come away with anything but a negative impression. Through the spreading of knowledge, people can demand a change in foreign policy that would greatly benefit the entire world.

This isn't really true. I imagine you're referring to the Iran situation right now. The only people really throwing a hissy fit about the Obama administration not taking a strong stance is the Republican party in this country - nobody else. Nowhere else in the world.

I agree with your comments about the abysmal state of certain things concerning the US, but that war comment is just not true, at least not regarding the last century. There are plenty of wars we got involved in that we should NOT have, but we didn't march in and START a bunch of wars in the 20th Century.

Our record in the 21st is rotten, but I (along with LOTS of other Americans) am against the current wars and a lot of us did NOT vote for George W. Bush either time.

Still, every year, throngs of immigrants are willing to risk their lives trying to get to America. It's also full of expatriates more than willing to reap the benefits of living here even while they bash it.

Some Americans are stupid. Some aren't.

I *FAR* prefer watching a film with subtitles - that way you get the delivery of the original actor, you can hear the tone in their voice, you get the performances the way they were intended and their mouths actually move in sync with what they're saying. I'm so used to subtitles that I forget they're there - they become a part of the movie.

Dubs are HORRIBLE. The voice actors they hire are usually cheap. The lines are usually re-written or dumbed down in some way to sync the new dialogue with the mouth movements of the original actors - this takes away from the original meaning of scenes. You lose the delivery of the actors, you lose a whole bunch... and all of this because you're either too stupid or too lazy to read subtitles.

How can you take in what the actor is portraying with his face when you have to read the bottom of the screen to know what he's saying?

I understand why some people enjoy movies with subtitles, it keeps it in it's original form and whatnot...however your reasoning doesn't really make sense to me.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I just don't understand how you can be reading the subtitles AND watching the actors subtle facial expressions etc.

As I said, I forget the subtitles are there. I read very quickly, and a good subtitle track makes sure there's not too many words to read on screen at once... your eyes quickly scan the words, so you know what is being said, and then your eyes go back to what the actor is doing. Maybe it takes a little bit of training but I've been watching subtitled movies since I was fairly young and now it comes as second nature.

I prefer subs as I find the mismatch of dubbing distracting, and also does anyone feel that the dubbing actors in the studio cannot get into the same mindset as the actors speaking & acting in the film?

The OP said 'Is this a children's movie? No', however in America, can't kids watch any movie as long as there is an adult with them? Therefore younger people might not be able to read the subs fast enough! In the UK, this will probs be an '18' meaning noone under 18 years old can watch it - with an adult or not...

A kid can watch an AA (adult Accompaniment) movie with a parent but if it is rated A or rated R there is no admittance in the theaters under 18. At least that is my understanding. They even card at the door.

But I agree completely with you and NonSequitir_1, dubbing is SO distracting. I would take subtitles over dubs any day. I agree the tone and feeling are always way off, almost to the point where it ruins the feel of the movie.

I have no issues with subtitles, but I recorded my version off of IFC's pay-per-view and that's what they showed, so that's what I got.

It was a far better dub than 'The Substitute' by the way, which had very distracting voices that didn't go with the actors (I much preferred the subtitles, but those I watched it with didn't, so I was outnumbered).

Anyway, making a blanket statement about 'dumb Americans' is pretty 'dumb' in itself and a bit infantile. While there is a good part of the population in the U.S. that needs their entertainment spoonfed to them or told how to feel about important issues by their church, the rest of us are fairly intelligent and some even above average.

In any case, enough said about it.

The American market is not good for anything else than American movies (read this and then the in-between afterwards). Off course there are a lot of Americans prefering subtitles instead of a dubbed movie..I dislike dubbed movies and would rather not see it than watch in in a dubbed version.

I think Norway is one outta few countries here in Europe ( I really dont know about the other Scandinavian countries, but I think they used subs as well..?) that doesnt dub movies (children's movies comes with a: Norwegian dubbing, Norwegian subs and in the original version, un-texted).

If you watch a French movie, you want to hear the French language as well, as one person here mentioned, the movement of the mouth contra the dubbing doesnt not fit at all most of the time....)....

It's really not a matter of beeing stupid, more arrogance, or ignorance....I dont know which one you prefer...

I havent seen this movie, but watch it with subs!! Norwegian can be quite funny, even though you dont understand it:)!!

I don't buy this "distracted by subtitles"-bullcrap. Because subtitles are designed so that it's very hard to get distracted by them (if you're over 7 years old). The real problem has to be this: Some americans are so narrowminded they have trouble relating to characters that speak a foreign language.

I personally refuse to watch Foreign language movies dubbed as it tends to compromise the original film. I don't know what the big deal is about reading subs. The first time I saw a subtitled film I was eight years old and had no problem following it. It's irritating to me that foreign language films get very little chance here (the United States) because people won't read the subtitles. And the ones that usually do well are cheap and forgetable(Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon).

I like how all the people complaining about Americans being stupid/ignorant here are pretty stupid/ignorant themselves. Most In Spain, many parts of latin America, Italy, and China they all prefer dubs, and dub things MUCH MORE than they do in America. I wouldn't be surprised if this was true for many other countries as well, I just don't know as much about them. America seems to have more subs than most countries I know about.

I guess the Spanish and Chinese have much smaller IQ's than Americans. Thanks guys!

In Norway they only dub children-movies, but on the DVD's/blu-rays, and even at the theatres you can choose to see the subtitled versions instead. When I take my daughter to see a movie I refuse to let her see the dubbed versions of the movies!

Why would you (or all the others that follow) even care? Isn't it a matter of choice? Having to glance down to read a subtitle detracts from enjoying the cinematography, and while I've nothing against the subtitles, it is a distraction from enjoying the film as it was meant to be experienced - visually. So you lose something on either choice, don't you? By having to miss some of the nuances of the visual, or having to put up with some mismatched dialogue. Sometimes it's fun - like watching an early Godzilla feature, other times you just want to take it all in without having to read your film. Again, what's your beef other then the obvious one against Americans. You don't like it? Skip Hollywood and just stick to your films wherever that may be. Stupid statement, and it's spawned even more stupidity in this thread.

Thunderhawk's response is funny & yes I'm an American. I will not watch this dubbed so that means I have to wait for the DVD to watch it in the correct filmed language. I hate to say it but I agree they are too lazy to read subtitles (well most of them & some can't read very well either) I prefer subtitles on all my movies no matter what the language and NEVER listen to dubbing. It's awful 99% of the time & can completely ruin an otherwise good movie. I remember going to see "Rumble in the Bronx" w/Jackie Chan and it was dubbed. I thought it was a joke so I laughed and laughed & thought the subtitles would show up, too bad I was dead wrong & couldn't take any of it remotely seriously. Dubbing is a completely pointless wasted medium that needs to be extinguished altogether. If you can't read, well it's you're own damn fault. You miss so much of the subtly of the actors despite not understanding the language it is spoken in. I watch everything w/subtitles no matter what. Try watching everything w/subtitles and/or Closed Captioning and you will be amazed of all the things you will learn and can pick up. Believe it or not within a week w/constant subtitles you won't even realize you are reading. What a waste to dub this & well anything!!

Nice choise of words, but you're arguing for a dumb cause. "Detracts from enjoying the cinematography..." How many subtitled movies have you seen? Maybe subtitles soil 2 % of the experience. Dubbed voices destroy the entire feel of the movie. It really is as simple as that.

I think that when we dub some other country movie we put or own twist with the translation. America is all about money and our culture prefers movie in English. I'm fine with dubbing on a stupid and fun movie. If I'm drinking and laughing with my friends, I prefer to listen to the movie in the background. If it is a good movie, one that you really watch intently, then I prefer subtitles.

Also, when referring to Americans as one group of people, try to remember that we're a country that's bigger than Europe. Generalizing about Americans is like saying that everyone in Europe is the same. If you think that the Irish and Brits don't get along, watch Texans and New Englanders talk politics.

It is obviously stupid to generalize the entire American population, I'm sure there's a few of them can actually read and prefer subtitles.

But it has to be said that the main reason that foreign movies don't make it in Hollywood and America in general, is because Americans are too damn lazy to read the subtitles. Or they lack the capability to read that quickly. It's sad, really.
The rest of the world who doesn't have English as their native tongue, and who doesn't dub seem to manage just fine though. Strange.

It's funny how defensive they get when people criticize their intelligence. But there's no avoiding it, I've travelled a lot, and I have never come across such stupidity anywhere in the world as in America. My roommate couldn't place England on a map, or even think of a city there, for example. And people here consider him "smart". Kudos to the Americans who realize that the majority of their population is downright dumb. You people give me hope for the rest of them.

Scandinavia, all of Europe in fact. Countries like Spain, France, Germany & Italy are few of the countries in Europe who dub. The reason for that was that it made it easier to control and censor what they wanted. But they're coming along, and they're slowly starting to use subtitles as well. They often use subtitles in South America as well.
The rest of the world knows how to read. Really, it isn't that hard.

I've been to all of those countries, and even though most of them do dub, you were still able to find something on TV that wasn't. (Except France, they kinda suck. But I did go see Harry Potter 5 in Toulouse, which was actually not dubbed.)

And for as long as I have lived in the US, I have never come across a movie with subtitles on TV or in the cinema. Foreign movies at all, are rare. So that you uses subtitles on the few "chosen ones" that actually make it to the theatres isn't all that impressive. I'm amazed Slumdog won best movie to be honest.
Cause you know, Americans will rather do remakes of successful movies from other countries instead. Cause that's really necessary.

How many people that live in a country isn't really relevant to "do they use subtitles or not". It would have made more sense if you brought up different ethnicities in a country instead. I'm saying that if you don't dub it, then you do re-makes. It's sad that you can't just leave a movie be. It's one thing with old movies, but new ones.. Really? Is it that challenging to just read the subtitles?
And I think anyone who dub are stupid. So what, "others do it more than we do!"

Americans are too ignorant to watch a movie with subtitles. They believe everything should be in english. Yes I am American. And no I personally don't know of anyone that would not complain about having to read subtitles. Really sucks for us. That is probably a big reason I will almost never get to see many if not any at all foreign films. Also why we have to get an American remake of every Japanese horror film which everyone raves about not knowing it was remade from a superior film.

Edit: I don't know if anyone else liked it or not but I was surprised by the subtitles in Slumdog Millionare. Never seen it done that way before. Puts the subtitles where you can easily watch the film and read it at the same time.

Huh? I have never seen an english-dubbed movie, with the exception of some manga (that is, animations).

If you want dubbed movies, go to Italy - there EVERYTHING is dubbed. No wonder italians royally suck at foreign languages.

And I am half-italian, so I should know. Lived there long enough, cara la mia famiglia italiana, bacioni, ma purtroppo, con le lingue non ci siete proprio portati.

How I know? Buddy, I haven't only traveled in America, I live here. Mhm. Almost none of my American buddies would even consider watching a movie with subtitles. And my "assumptions" are not based on your likes and dislikes for subtitles alone, trust me. It is somewhat hard not to talk about the US when I get stupidity and rudeness shoved in my face every single day. And don't you start that "with my attitude it's no wonder," cause I am nothing but polite to people. A lot of Americans are really nice, I'm not saying they're not. But sometimes..
Like, I have a friend who works in Disney. She meets people from all over the world. She says there are no other people who's on the Americans' level of rudeness or stupidity. The stereotype is there for a reason, pal.

Honestly, I was biased when I came here, from all the negative stuff we get on TV. But I was willing to wait and see, and decided to hold my final opinion until I actually had a chance to evaluate for myself.

I can hope that the reason you people seem exceedingly stupid is because I live in a state full of rednecks, and that the northern parts of America is where the intelligent bunch live. My roommate from New York is cool. The one from Kentucky: not so much. The New Yorker at least sees the ridiculousness of his own country.

Excuse me for seeing all the Anti-American hate here on this blog regarding American moviegoers & DEAD SNOW, but all you posters who think that all American moviegoers don't like to see Foreign Horror Movies with English Subtitles, might be surprised to hear what I'm about to say on the subject. About more that a week ago, I saw DEAD SNOW at the Cinema Village theater in Manhattan, NYC where it was being shown in it's original Norwegian version with English Subtitles. The theater was jam packed and the film's directors, Tommy Wirkola was present at the screening. The audience and myself totally enjoyed the movie even with the subtitles and when the end titles of the film came up, the audience gave a rounding sound of applause. Even Tommy Wirkiola, who directed the film, said at the Q&A after the film was over, that even he was surprised at an American audience being so appreciative and positively responsive at a Foreign Horror Movie that is not in English and with subtitles. So that will show you that not all American moviegoers hate films with subtitles or do not appreciate foreign horror films!

I happen to be a huge fan of foreign horror films and own:

Haute Tension
Ils
Martyrs
[REC]
Frontier(s)

And so on....all of the above mentioned films I own are in the original language (French, and Spanish) with English subtitles. And I would not watch it any other way. I tried watching Ils once with English voice-overs just to see the difference and I found the dubbing and the mismatching of their lips to be distracting. So I will never watch another foreign horror film unless it's in the original format.

I have watched Haute Tension on 4 different occasions. All 4 times I watched it in French language with English subtitles. And all 4 times I showed it to 4 people that have never seen the film before, we watched it with the subtitles also...everyone that has seen it so far as enjoyed it and hasn't cared about reading subtitles.

So in conclusion, all of you ignorant ass holes who have a burning passionate hate for America and feel the need to bash it every chance you get....SHUT YOUR MOUTHS

By the way, I just bought 'Dead Snow' off of Ebay, I can't wait for it to arrive.

Well, you're in for a real treat regarding DEAD SNOW, since I guess that you'll enjoy that film as much as the other ones you mentioned in your post It seems that you and I are kindred spirits regarding Foreign Horror Films, since I also own on DVD those very same Films you mentioned in their original language version with subtitles and I also have shown these films to my friends who are also horror fans and they enjoyed seeing them with English subtitles rather than dubbed in English. People like you and I such spread the word to other Horror fans that it is completely worth the effort to see these Foreign Horror Films in their original version with subtitles to really enjoy these films to the fullest. I also can recommend to you another great recent Foreign Horror Film which is the 2006 Italian Giallo Horror thriller EYES OF CRYSTAL(OCCHIO DI CRISTALLO) that is very similar in style to the earlier films of Dario Argento and is unfortunately only available on Region 2 DVD in England in it's original Italian version with English subtitles, but you can get it for a good price on EBAY as I have, but you need a Region Free DVD(like I have) to see this great Italian Horror thriller.

I saw Haute Tension in theaters here in the US and it was subtitled.

You know...everything about this thread has made me sad. All this anger and hatred over a movie. Did any of you ever see the Dr. Seuss cartoon The Butter Battle? The story describes a conflict between the blue-suited Yooks, who prefer to eat their bread with the "butter side up," and orange-suited Zooks, who eat their bread with the "butter side down." Silly, but poignant. Well, here we are, hating one another over the way we watch movies. People will always find a reason to be abhorrent to one another.

I have a three year old son that has no idea about any of this, any of you. But someday he's going to be out there with you and your children. Is this what we want to leave behind for them; anger, hatred, intolerance? There could be three people left in the world and two of them would still be in the other guy's way.

I just came here to find out if Dead Snow is any good. I got a great deal for it on eBay. And BTW, I intend to watch it with subtitles on as I do all my foreign films. So please, don't go chocking a kitten or wishing cancer on a puppy because some guy in Kansas wants to watch his movie with bad voice overs. I'm trying to help build tolerance one foreign film at a time.

p.s. The subtitles for Nochnoy dozor (Night Watch) were the best I've ever seen. Too bad they decided not to do the same on the Dnevnoy dozor (Day Watch) US release.
