SPOILER ALERT!!!!! Why do they need to have sex?

Its just something that seems forced and stupid. It might be a good comercial (still stupid) strategy to atract people to the movie but it doent really shows anything so... and the best part of all is the beginning of the scene, where the camera starts with Emily scratching her legs really sexy just wanting, thinking about the looper in the farm, and then she just cant take it anymore and calls the macho guy who obviously cant say no to a booty call. They even finished with the post-cigarrette lol, I guess they can be really proud, they used all the possible clichés available for that scene.

Normal humans like sex.

Besides that, though, it helps cement why he's willing to make the sacrifice he makes.

he wants to protect the kid of every chick he bangs

did she work out her sexual tension by swinging an axe?

^ that's a good analysis actually. He did offer to take care of the prostitute's child. Maybe he has a soft spot for kids...which completely disappears later. -_-

If the love of your life dies and only killing a child can save her you might lose your love for certain children. Although he didn't seem happy about what he had to do he just wanted his wife back.

That was my thought as well.

It felt tacked on but that's so common in movies these days I don't even bother to question it anymore. At least here you can just say it's because she was lonely.

Yeah, that scene seemed forced/unnecessary. I have no issues with sex scenes or even the two developing some romantic relationship but it felt like it was added because they thought they were supposed to, not because it served the story or characters, and then it was forgotten.

It was kind of nice, though, to finally watch a movie that didn't have a girl splaying her legs all over some guy like her tummy is craving a baby. There really was no sex scene, just that moment of need. Here was her chance to be held and touched. Remember that to the girl, it's more than just sexy time.

because she has to get pregnant with the REAL rainmaker

she needed some dick

I thought it was cool to see a girl in a movie behave like normal girls do irl. Nice change of pace.

Animal instinct, mostly. And probably boredom. Not much to do on a farm apart from attack tree stumps with an axe

This might have been in the story to show that Joe was falling for Sara (or he already did in the short time they had together). This made it easier for him to kill himself at the end because he wouldn't keep himself alive so he could experience "love" as the current self. Because don't forget the Joe right before that one completely changes himself and wants to correct the future because he found his wife. Before that he was just a corrupt soul that had no purpose.
