5 reason people aren't going to see this

1. Cost of the theater
2. It's a musical. A lot of people don't like musicals
3. It will be streaming soon
4. The cast interviews. They're embarrassing to watch.
5. The reviews are great but people are cautious of overhyped movies.

Bonus: 2024 has been pretty awful for theater films. The most successful flicks are sequels.

6. Some people aren't fans of Ariana Grande.
7. Sane people don't want to give money to a hideously ugly, woke, egotistical diva like Cynthia Ervio.
8. Some people don't want to watch a movie geared heavily towards the gay community.
9. People are getting sick of the whole, "Feel sorry for the [female] villain through a prequel" trend.
10. Fans of the original "Wizard of Oz" don't want to watch the story twisted in favor of the Wicked Witch of the West.

>6. Some people aren't fans of Ariana Grande.

I’m not a fan but she did an excellent job though there were other singer-actresses more suited for the role.

I think it’s hilarious how they had to cake more white makeup on her to play Glenda than they did green makeup on Ervio to play the wicked witch.

>7. Sane people don't want to give money to a hideously ugly, woke, egotistical diva like Cynthia Ervio

I think her social posts about the fan-edited poster were moronic and I avoid her interviews, but I thought she was great in the film, though any number of actresses would have been.

At the same time, I won’t be watching anything else she’s in.

>8. Some people don't want to watch a movie geared heavily towards the gay community.

All musicals are somewhat geared toward that community. But a hell of a lot of straights, me included, enjoy a good musical. I saw the stage version and was looking forward to the movie.

Also, while this film did include gay characters, the film wasn’t about those characters being gay so I had no issue with it.

> 9. People are getting sick of the whole, "Feel sorry for the [female] villain through a prequel" trend.

That’s not true. If it’s a well made film like Melificent, people enjoy it.

>10. Fans of the original "Wizard of Oz" don't want to watch the story twisted in favor of the Wicked Witch of the West.

The fact that the stage musical is a massive success proves that wrong.

WOO is one of my daughter’s favorite films and she loved the Wicked play and movie.

1.Ticket price in UK £7.99

reply

With a $5 movie ticket here on Tuesdays, your night ends up being about $45 with concessions for 2 people. That's without kids. The cost of going to the theater on average is a luxury.

reply

It looks like this movie is going to hit about $700 mil total at box office , which would make it a success

reply

It's already broken even. In this market, that's pretty good.

reply

So you’re admitting you were wrong when you made this thread?

reply

No. I did say the movie was a failure. I listed the reasons people aren't going.

reply

It hasn't broken even yet. Big budget movies need to make 2.5 times the budget to break even. Slightly more if the marketing was particularly heavy, and this was. It will turn a profit, but I doubt it will be a box office juggernaut. It's always hard to say though.
Correction: I just looked at the 2 days this week added to its totals, and it has indeed passed the 2.5x the budget mark as of today.

reply

Well. The holiday season has a few bumps for it. Plus, not to be too political, a certain voting demographic may choose to watch this rather than spend time with family they disagree with (i don't think there are too many of those).

Okay, that's a little too controversial.

$573M WW after 4 weeks. Should end up around $650M.

reply

I believe people overstate the effect of ticket prices. Movie ticket prices have increased less than most everything else in recent years, and relative to the value of the dollar, movies are cheaper today than they were in 2019, when movies were doing fine.

Musicals tend to do well, and many children's movies are musicals.

Where you are correct is with your comment about streaming. That's why ALL movies are suffering at the box office anymore. People prefer to watch at home. Reviews don't matter. I don't know anything about the cast interviews, and I highly doubt many other people are aware of them, and they aren't affecting ticket sales.

reply

It did pretty good even though it was pulled from most theaters after a month.

It made over half a billion with the combined production and marketing costs for both films being around $350 million.

https://screenrant.com/wicked-part-1-2-movie-budget-universal-record

So part 1 cost approx. $175 million.

I’m curious to see if part 2 does better or worse.

More people may watch part 1 on streaming and enjoy it so much they decide to hit the theater for part 2 making it earn more.

Or the people who saw part 1 in theaters may have enjoyed it but not enough to pay to see part 2 so they’ll wait for streaming.

reply

That's what I was seeing with this. I hope the sequel has a better impression than I had for Dune 2. That's a pretty movie but I didn't like it.

reply

I didn’t like either parts.

Boring.

reply

That's fair. They are long. Zendaya and Chalamet aren't that interesting.

reply

Not at all, especially her.

reply

Still playing in 3300 theaters (5th wknd), started with 3900! Will continue into January.

reply

Cinemark pulled it from their theaters in my town.

I ended up seeing it at AMC but it was only showing in one small theater to make way for other new films coming out.

reply

5 is definitely true. Reviews cannot be trusted anymore. Mediocre films are hyped into the stratosphere these days. Getting burned by it a couple of times will make you give up on contemporary film. That sure happened to me.

You are the only one talking about Imdb. I am talking about reviews in general.
