Flop incoming
Going off the teaser, this will be one of the biggest bombs of the year.
shareMaybe not. It's the second highest grossing Broadway musical of all time. It's earned over 1.5 billion dollars.
shareAnd Cats earned $3.5 billion and we saw how that turned out.
shareThat was world wide revenue. I was just looking at the Broadway numbers. So yeah, Wicket is behind Cats, but it's also 20 younger than Cats.
Let's not ignore that Cats was a shit movie. I loved that musical and thought the movie was an abomination.
Probably, but I hope not. Musicals are a hard sell nowadays. The director isn't a household name and his last musical, In The Heights, bombed at the box office. There are some actors I like in the cast, but no huge stars.
shareToo many film directors don’t know how to direct musicals and don’t even bother adding people to their team who do know how to work with musicals. We also have the issue of too many screen writers who don’t know how to write a good musical movie.
shareWon't flop with Ariana Grande playing the lead.
shareShe isn't a box office draw.
share
As Daffy Duck might say - "she couldn't draw flies if she was covered in syrup!"
this aged poorly
share
One could argue the context of the quote perhaps didn't age well, but Daffy is timeless..
But if we really have to be fair, literally *anyone* could have played any of these roles and this movie would still put asses in the seats due to the millions of viewings of the stage play around the world, a play that has continuously drawn people for over 20 years and continues to this day.
In a movie like this, we didn't need performers to be gate draws, we only needed them to not tank the movie.
So yes, Grande did not tank an automatic winner.
thats my line...
shareAll I'm going to say is the odds are against it...that's for sure. I wish it the best of luck. But it was already perfect a dozen times over. Not sure this film is necessary.
