Why does the VFX look more real in the old version?

I watched two versions back to back, both in 4K (The old version released 4K remastered a few weeks ago). Despite the old version, which was released 28 years ago and cost half of the budget for the new version, the VFX looks more real. Some scenes look like real news footage of real twisters, but not a single scene in the latest version made me believe they are real.

Speaking of the budgets… the old version hired two talents: Jan de Bont and Michael Crichton. They just made Speed and Jurassic Park! To hire talents like them costs a fortune! Which means most budgets wouldn't go to VFX.

I agree at times this new version reminded me of the movies you see on Sci-Fi channel.

They are lying about the production budget!

I agree. There also wasn't any real "wow" moment where the camera lingers on a tornado. I have a suspicion the director had a New Age concern about glorifying a disaster that kills people and ruins houses so he didn't want to focus too much attention on it out of "tornado guilt."

I've been noticing this with CGI as well. It seems in the old days they actually put effort in trying to make their CGI stuff look as real as possible. Someone probably looked at thousands of photos and videos of tornadoes, as well as studying their movement and behavior and the destruction they caused before even thinking about making any tornadoes on-screen with a computer. Even cheap TV movies with tornado themes made after the original Twister film came out tried to make their tornadoes look realistic, despite the lower budget.

Sounds like they've gotten really lazy in the CGI animation dept. these days in Hollywood.
