Nice try, have a cookie for that, but in the end. This is the End failed miserably like 90% of other American comedies. You just don't get subtlety or comedic timing. American comedies are about as subtle as a brick through the window.
Ok, so you didn't find this film funny, but to say that "90% of American comedies" failed miserably is absurd.
What about Robert Altman's M.A.S.H, the films of Blake Edwards? Classics such as Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd? Mel Brooks, The Airplane! movies, The Naked Gun movies, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Beverly Hills Cop, The Simpsons Movie, Cheech and Chong, Stir Crazy, Tropic Thunder, The films of Kevin Smith and Bill Murray? I could go on an list more films, actors and directors from America whose comedy is witty, nuanced, subtle, has international appeal, has stood the test of time and is, most importantly funny.
We Brits have given the world some really dumb stinkers in the name of comedy; The Harry Hill Movie, The Keith Lemon Movie, Dad's Army- The Movie (even ardent fans of the TV Series disliked it), The later 'Carry On' films (which relied on sordid smut and cheap innuendo to get cheap laughs), The Fat Slags (based on the Viz Comic characters). For every "Monty Python's Life of Brian" or "Shaun of the Dead" you get a "Mutiny on the Buses" or "Sex Lives of the Potato Men", So don't imagine for a second that it is only the Americans who can be "as subtle as a brick through the window".
Honestly, come on. This is getting old. Don't you knobs have something better to do? Chat about your gay comedians, nihilism, or rebellious hooligans? Maybe something fun, I don't know...the BBC?
To those of you jumping on the bandwagon, it's a clearly ridiculous exaggeration and tiresome generalization. Ugggghhhhhh
of course, since Peter Sellers (British) was brilliant & most everything else about Dr. Strangelove (American) was equally, both sides can take credit
ps: saying "British comedy peaked with Monty Python" may well be true and is certainly no insult. The real question is whether it peaked with Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove.
I can't believe I'm actually responding to one of these stupid threads but what hilarious British movies are you referring to? Shawn of the Dead? Hot Fuzz? Monty Python? Doesn't really seem like the Brits make a lot of international comedies.
Dog Soldiers Severed Death at a Funeral (the first one) Human Traffic Cockneys Vs Zombies In Bruges Inbetweeners the Movie The boat that rocked (known as 'Pirate Radio' in the US) 24hr Party People It's all gone Pete Tong Attack the Block Shawn of the Dead Withnail & I Doghouse Borat
British movies' do go international, just not to the United States. US theaters rarely show Britcoms because they reckon much of the comedy would fly over people's heads, that is a decision made by Americans for Americans. Blame your distributors for treating you like you are stupid.
