Why some people HATE this movie.

I was initially baffled by the amount of hate this movie seems to have inspired in IMDB message-board monkeys, but I think this entry from the online medical dictionary may offer some insight.

homosexual panic (ho"mo-sek´shoo-al pan´ik) an acute, extreme anxiety reaction brought on by circumstances that induce the unconscious fear of being homosexual or of succumbing to homosexual impulses, or the fear or delusional conviction that the person is thought by others to be a homosexual, often accompanied by agitation, guilt, hallucinations, or depression.

My theory is that certain viewers of this film who are acutely apprehensive about their own masculinity feel compelled to disparage the movie as a way of affirming their own non-homosexuality. Jokes such as the one about giving a wizard a hand-job make them distinctly uncomfortable and induce a "homosexual panic", fueling their compulsion to log onto IMDB and write tedious posts about how much they didn't like this movie, and therefore implying by extension how much they don't like performing sex-acts on dirty old wizards.

Then again, maybe they're just a bunch of humourless prudes. Who knows?

I think the problem with this movie is that it tackles a nerd/geek fantasy subject. Have you ever tried to sit around a group of nerds and geeks, like the type of people who play pen and paper RPGs? It's often about as fun as spending time with your grandparents.

Crack a lewd joke with those types and you might get a lecture about the oppressive nature of society towards women by a bunch of grown men sooner than you get a laugh. Point to a sexy girl walking by and they might get irritated because you interrupted a very serious conversation about chess opening strategies.

They usually don't have much of a sense for this kind of crude, politically-incorrect, lewd humor that the film features. Many of them are probably still virgins and never even tried to smoke weed, let alone drink alcohol.

I fit into an exceptional case where I am a nerdy type (software engineer) but also loved partying and pursuing women and never took myself so seriously and also recognized overtly-geeky things as being rather pathetic. I was kind of nerdy without being so geeky. It's like I love Star Trek but I don't memorize details about the universe or attend any conventions (too geeky for me). The movie seemed like a perfect fit for me. I found it quite funny.

I'm not worried about the gay stuff. It's just not a very good movie.

Because it's not funny? 🤷‍♂️

This showed a pedophile relationship with the wizard. Thats much more of a liberal thing to enjoy, and they are usually supportive of gays, so this logic doesn't really track.
