So they surmised that the boxes were waiting for Superman to die before coming back to life. Yet, they've been on earth thousands of years....and Superman less than 100.

When they resurrected Supe they didn't just say "hey box, do your thang" but they had to make sure they followed certain steps, with Cyborg doing the control as well. And the Supe they got was quite pissed and ready to fuck the world into oblivion ...

They couldn't have come to life a long ago because the trigger was missing.
Other events could be the trigger as well, but those events never happened.
