Kanye West?

I can think of literally 50 people I would've marked for over Kanye in one of those awesome cameo roles in the big battle. What a waste!

Why not Robert Downey Jr, Alec Balwin, Will Arnett, Neil Patrick Harris, Stephen Colbert?

If they really wanted a musician to play that MTV anchor role then Justin Timberlake would have been fine. At least he has comedic experience.

I did love seeing Jim Carey, Sacha Baron Cohen, and John C Reilly, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler though.

reply

Absolutely! Justin Timberlake would have been great! Part of SNL and everything!!!! What a shame they went with a Kardashian! Blah

reply

How is he a Kardashian? He's a West.

I'm no super Kanye fan, but he's been a producer for many years. Successful too.

As loony as he is, he does have a sense of humor about himself at times. I liked the cameo.

reply

And you're entitled to your opinion just as I'm entitled to mine.

reply

Actually, I stated facts.

Fact: He's a West, not a Kardashian.

Fact: He's been a producer for many years (10+).

reply

And an opinion: "I liked the cameo."

reply

Yup, I'm not familiar with any of Mr. West's works except that clip of him interrupting Taylor Swift, but I thought this cameo was well done.

How can you tell if someone's a compulsive liar? I mean, assuming their pants aren't on fire?

reply

Yes, you are entitled to your opinion.

And your opinion in this case sucks balllllzzzzz.

Nuf said.

reply

Yes, His Sense Of Humor Is Quite Good..... Declaring Himself The Next Nelson Mandela...

reply

You must be joking? Kanye West and sense of humour in the same sentence? He's an absolute TOOL and I was very disappointed to see him in a cameo, he's not worthy.

reply

Absolutely! Justin Timberlake would have been great! Part of SNL and everything!!!! What a shame they went with a Kardashian! Blah

Pretty sure I did see Justin Timberlake as part of Liam Neeson's team...I'm not 100% as I was more focused on Liam himself and John C. Reilly lol but the one guy definitely looked a lot like him if it wasn't actually him

reply

LOL I'm kinda loving this "Kanye Kardashian".

So, he's a KK in short :DDD I just wish it got more out there, would've loved to see his reaction, I mean breakdown :DDD

Only pyssies engage in discussions with d1cks, if I didn't reply you're a dick

reply

And he's racist why?

reply

How is he an artist if he doesn't write music? He is a singer.

reply

He doesn't even sing, his "songs" are largely just talking.

He's a decent producer and a mainstream image people eat up, he's far from a musical artist.

reply

He's a producer and he has tried to sing a few times. He is an artist.

reply

Bull5h1t artist? Piss artist? Sandwich artist? You're gonna have to narrow it down, man.

reply

I'm a female, and he's an artist.

He produces music and he's a pretty good rapper sometimes. Like I said, not a super fan, but I like some of his music.

Just like everyone can't sing well, everyone can't rap well.

If it's not a genre of music you like, then I understand why you don't think he's an artist. But that's like someone who doesn't like country music saying they're all yodeling and not good singers.

reply

Just making a rather crappy joke. For what it's worth I do very much like Hip-Hop, ( as well as country music, for that matter ). I don't think Kanye is particularly talented: I find his lyrics are substandard and a-typical of the vapid bravado and dull posturing that has ruined hip hop for decades now, his delivery is lazy and weak and his production seems little more than getting obvious, very popular soul tunes- most of which seem straight from a supermarket 'Best Of Motown' CD and creating fairly ropey loops out of them.

I think maybe he's shrewdly pitched a flag in the current trend in hip-hop and R&B and made some very marketable pop music, but personally I'd struggle to call it 'artistic'.

reply

Well said.

Thanks for debating like a grown-up.lol

Have a good evening/day.

reply

As of late I'd agree with you but when it comes down to it The College Dropout is one of the best hip hop CD's released in the past 10 years just my opinion. Also Late Orchestration is why I think of this guy as an artist.

reply

I'll have to be honest and hold my hands up that I've never listened to a complete Kanye album- my only exposure has been through media coverage and radio play. I have a few mates who have a similar taste in music as I who have said the same thing as you: despite his being a feckless doofus, his early stuff is good. But personally I haven't heard anything yet by the self-proclaimed 'genius saviour of hip-hop' that has lived up to any amount of the hype. If you can throw a track recommendation my way, I'm humbly prepared to re-evaluate my opinion...

reply

Anything off of Late Orchestration its him with a London orchestra and is pretty impressive stuff also his first CD he is pretty much the opposite of what he is now. He actually talks about real issues instead of being a God and clothes. If you like Jay Z give Never let me Down a try.

reply

I tried. Looked up Late Orchestration and The College Dropout and tried to give every track a chance. Naaaah, still not digging it I'm afraid. To me it sounds like lazy sampling, lazy rapping ( literally as well as stylistically ): but then maybe it's indicative of the the sound of modern mainstream hip-hop/r&b, which hasn't been my cup of tea for a long time now. As I mentioned before, I have to give kudos ( ahem- 'props'?! ) to the guy for his shrewd marketing/self-promotion, even if I'm not a fan of the music.

That's interesting- I'm sure I would enjoy hearing some live yodelling- but I'm not sure how if your comment relates to me or something I've said?

reply

I'm sorry, what cameo did he have? I don't know what he looks like...

reply

[deleted]

Ah, ok, I know who he is then, thanks for the reply.

If you don't like Kanye then you are a racist. lol. That is something that re tard Kanye himself would say. lol. Him being in the movie brought it down 2 points in my book. The whole ending was bad enough without him. Love the 1st half of the movie though.

reply

I'm a fan of his music but he was not even remotely funny. However, I didn't really mind it because I didn't expect him to be funny. The actual comedic actors in that sequence were equally unfunny, which was actually disappointing because comedic acting is their profession - though they can't really be blamed either because nobody could have made the writing in that scene funny. The whole sequence was just painful to watch, and pushed the movie from a 4 to a 2/10 in my book.

It was brief, but I thought the MTV crew was a pretty good reflection of the original VJs. I definitely recognized the Martha Quinn and Nina Blackwell characters, and I assumed Kanye was meant to be J.J. Jackson. It made sense to me.

reply

it's ironic because MTV didn't officially debut until 1981, while the film is supposed to take place in 1980.

Also, MTV in its earliest years scarcely played any videos at all from contemporary black musicians, until Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean", Prince's "Little Red Corvette", and Herbie Hancock's "Rockit".

reply

We can choose to believe that this is where MTV got the idea for its v-jays.

reply

That is not at all what irony is.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

So you liked the cameo by Jim Carey, Sacha Baron Cohen, and John C Reilly, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

But not Will Smith or Mr. West.

And wish they could have been played by Robert Downey Jr, Alec Balwin, Will Arnett, Neil Patrick Harris, Stephen Colbert?

Hmmmm.

reply
