Do I need to watch the anime??

Ghost In The Shell always interested me but I just never got around to watching it and I saw this the other day and I was absolutely bored despite the visuals being good I was just not into it so do I have to watch the anime to get more of what was going on or did the movie just fail it's source material?? I'm thinking about watching the anime anyways though.

I saw the anime film a long, long, long time ago.

Yep, this film, much like the anime version, was far from being 'action-only', so I can understand why you may have been bored (in that sense, I imagine you may be equally bored by the anime film?). In fact, you may find the original anime film more confusing, because the story in the Hollywood remake is a bit simpler and better told in general.

I think I'm still going to check it out I didn't need the movie to be a straight up action movie I really didn't expect it to be but I've heard nothing but good things about the anime I guess I'm just curious I don't really like seeing remakes without seeing the original at least once

I watched this movie with my son, and he said it was horrifying, and she was distressed when she pulled the heart of the spider's tank, because she had pulled her right hand out!

I'm gonna say that the anime version is also not for little kids.

Both films feature mature themes and plenty of violence.

Anime is far more philosophical, grimy, violent, depressing, polished, logical, beautiful, existential, and it has a great soundtrack.

reply

Yeah right

I found the live action much deeper in those themes than the 1995 version. Also, Clint Mansell did wonderful and the soundtrack is fantastic with new and old tunes.

reply

Clint mansell is an artist undoubtedly, his work in PI is one of my favorites. But like I said the whatever this is, adaptation or a remake it was completely unnecessary, unless done masterfully by a visionary and it wasn't and SJ is overrated.

reply

No, not at all. This movie stands on its own.
