Are you bothered by blackwashing? Or any other kind of 'washing'? I'm curious because I've noticed that every time the topic of whitewashing comes up, there are inevitably folks who will say 'who cares, get over it,' but I hardly see those same sentiments from people when white characters are turned into a different race. For example, there were similar complaints when the character of Rue from The Hunger Games was played by Amandla Stenberg, a biracial actress. And a few folks (white, I'm presuming) were upset when Idris Elba played Heimdall from the Thor and Avengers movies. Obviously, it's not necessarily the same people making these complaints, but I'm curious to hear what you all think. If whitewashing is okay, are other kinds of 'washing' ok? Would you accept a non-white James Bond? Perhaps a reboot of the Bourne series with a black guy?
Just curious: have you seen the original GOTS? The one from 1996?
Because The Major is very close to a white character in the original as well. So i wouldn't call it whitewashing by any means. Plus: it was a cyborg, cyborgs don't have race. And the girl that she had the "ghost" was obviously a Japanese girl ...
And yes, I mind whitewashing or blackwashing WHEN IT MATTERS.
Like in that stupid show on Netflix, where King Arthur and Morgana LaFey are ... black.
The guy in I'm Legend and the guy in I robot are pretty much white in the books, you will not see me complaining about Will Smith playing both.
And there's another aspect: even if the actor is not the perfect race or ethnicity it matters most if he can play that part. Like Prince of Persia with Gyllenhaal. he looked quite the part.
I have an Iranian friend that looks a lot like him in that movie, just shorter hair.
But now let me ask you the same: if you are so bothered by whitewashing why are you NOT upset by blackwashing???
Because The Major is very close to a white character in the original as well.
False. The context makes it perfectly clear she’s Japanese.
Plus: it was a cyborg, cyborgs don't have race.
Also false. Do you really think people would find it acceptable if Cyborg (DC character) were played by a white actor? If in the next Rockman/X game the title character shows up with a black skin tone, do you really think nobody would question it?

Yes, like here.

I’m going to go out on a limb and take a guess that maybe, just maybe, it has to do with one group facing societal and institutional discrimination while the other doesn’t. Crazy concept, I know.

"False. The context makes it perfectly clear she’s Japanese."
I'm not talking about what her original human form is, the features of the cyborg are quite European. If you watched the movie you would know.

DC cyborg is not entirely mechanic/electrical. Most of him is his original body, so your analogy fails, badly.
Not only that but you fail even more badly when you take a look at the comics character and notice that his cyborg/metal body parts are ... silver/white. The mayor FULL body is artificial.
But I do know that you would have NO Problem with a black superman ...
"I’m going to go out on a limb and take a guess that maybe, just maybe, it has to do with one group facing societal and institutional discrimination while the other doesn’t."
And that makes it ok? Reverse discrimination IS discrimination. If you want "equality" that's not how you get it, by discriminating against and alienating the other side.
And btw, we are NOT living in 1960 anymore, leave those anachronic arguments for their time.

That’s just the art style. Again, the context makes it clear that the character is racially Japanese same as how the context for The Simpsons makes it clear they are white despite how they look.

Ok but even if his mechanical parts were not outwardly visible and his body were completely artificial, he’s still black and people would (rightly) be upset if a white actor were cast. Looking and passing as human means having a racial appearance.
But I do know that you would have NO Problem with a black superman ...
Then you know nothing. If you mean Val-Zod or Calvin Ellis, yes no problem there. If you mean Clark Kent, that would be very wrong.

You're preaching to choir, but I can see where the others are coming from. Someone who prioritizes representation of nonwhite groups is going to favor something that creates it (even if it’s forced) and condemn something that removes it. Not very hard to understand.

You know what else we don’t live in? A vacuum. reply share

Yes, the character IINSIDE the cyborg is racially Japanese, the cyborg you even admit that it looks European.
It's the same in the movie, the character INSIDE the cyborg is racially Japanese. Have you even seen the movie???
And that's EXACTLY that: it follows the ART style of the manga. The ART STYLE is of an European looking Cyborg with a Japanese character INSIDE.
Thanks for finally understanding some of it.

No, it doesn't. As I said: all his cyborg parts ARE NOT BLACK. If you replace ALL his body with Cyborg parts in the same color WHAT do you get? A white cyborg ... tadaaaaaa. His black persona is not visible anymore.
Just how the Mayor Japanese persona is not visible anymore - all her body IS cybernetic, only the brain is Japanese. You still don't get the difference ... Scarlet is just how the Cyborg looks, the art style.
" If you mean Clark Kent, that would be very wrong."
Takeshi Kovacs is introduced as a white character, then we learn that’s just a sleeve and apparently the original was asiatic. And in the next season it was a black sleeve,

She is Japanese on the OUTSIDE as well. I don't doubt that to YOU she looks European (to me, no), but the context doesn't support it.

You misunderstand me. What I’m suggesting is the opposite: that the mechanical parts are all hidden and the black persona is what’s fully shown. Nobody would say that he lacks a race and that it would be acceptable for a white actor to play him.
There's been no indication that will actually happen. I'd be shocked if Zazlav and Gunn allow it.
EXACTLY. We don't.
Have you seen altered carbon?
Takeshi Kovacs is introduced as a white character, then we learn that’s just a sleeve and apparently the original was asiatic. And in the next season it was a black sleeve,
Which one was wrong and why?
The mayor is basically a sleeve …
No I haven’t. Which is wrong? Whichever goes against the book.
"She is Japanese on the OUTSIDE as well. I don't doubt that to YOU she looks European (to me, no), but the context doesn't support it."
She is not. Most likely you haven't seen the anime.
In the context of the story, Kusanagi is a cyborg whose consciousness can inhabit various bodies, making her physical appearance less tied to a specific ethnicity. The character's design is influenced by a blend of cultural elements, reflecting the cyberpunk themes of the series. Ultimately, her identity transcends traditional racial categories, emphasizing her role as a complex character in a futuristic world.
"Motoko’s shell model is Caucasian with a different color option. It is a mass produced model like a car."

The model is not “Cauasian,” that is false. Never is it said that she is anything other than Japanese in appearance and there’s no reason to think that she isn’t. She is never treated as though she doesn’t look like she belongs in that society.
Good question. You know.... Hollywood is sick. It is seriously ill.
It does plenty of black/whitewashing, but it all comes down to one thing - reboots/remakes/re-I can't come up with new shit so I'm just gonna do what's already been done before with a minor twist.
There was this really good finnish or swedish film about a girl vampire - hollywood had a remake for that as well - all white cast as in the original. Why? Because hollywood was too lazy to dub that shit and wanted to make a bigger portion of the money (as opposed to mere distribution money).
It does appear as if the Japanese were perfectly ok with whitewashing, since it brought them more money as well - they knew an asian actor would probably bring in less money, cause viewers are morons.
I'm seriously bothered by all the remakes/reboots. I can understand remaking a film that was made 60 years ago - but a film from 5-10 or even 20 years ago? Unless the original was really bad and you had better ideas (not likely - fun fact - most reboots/remakes are vastly inferior to the originals), you should leave it alone, unless... as I've previously said, it's a 70 year old film.
Changing the race for practical reasons is very different from changing it for ideological reasons. Almost all cases of so called "whitewashing" are done for practical reasons. To appeal to a mostly White Western audience, to cast a famous A list actor who is able to make a return on investment. While all cases of modern blackwashing is done for strictly ideological reasons. I am against a Black James Bond, but if for some reason they had to make him Black in order for the movie to make money, I would understand. So no, your analogy is false and you are wrong.
