Slow and gets slower!

Fell asleep after 20 minutes and woke up about ten minutes later feeling like I hadn't missed a thing. If there were hidden messages in this film, well I didn't find them. It starts off at a pedestrian pace and ends up in an almost snail pace crawl. Bale, Affleck and Harrelson are great. Its just too slow and lacking plot momentum in places. 6/10.

I agree. I wanted to love this movie before I even saw it bc great cast and anything filmed in the rust belt is cool to me...but it was so slow moving,I can't love! Could of been great, but lagged momentum !

reply

Great that you agree. I hate it when films are advertised as 'Fantastic' or 'Incredible' and turn out to be 'Dire'.

It's 02:24 and I've just finished watching.
One of the best casts ever but yeah it was way too slow and not much happened, I think this could have been a 30 minute short film.
Proper gutted as I was sure this was gonna be the best movie I've seen so far this year but that title goes to a TV movie I watched yesterday called Last Light, highly recommend it, Forrest W was so much better in that movie, he is a great actor but was miscast and underused here.

I remember being pumped up for this movie too then I watched and watched and watched and said *beep* it shut it off too slow

reply

Go watch a Marvel film then, this is a film about family, loss and character development. Not mindless violence and explosions.

reply

Well said. Unfortunately great films like this one are being relegated to indie production companies and playing more and more to shrinking audiences. The big money is being thrown at the mindless shoot em up and fantasy "blockbusters" - mindless being the operative word. Anyone under 30 these days is the target demographic. Film as an art form is slowly disappearing because the Millennials can not appreciate anything that doesn't give them instant gratification.

I had problems with this film, but it’s pace and cinematography were perfect. It is a human condition story built on the characters and their hopeless lives in a derelict post-Industrial steel town where the only way out is to sign on for another tour in Iraq, go to prison, or death by disease or violence. The slow pace immerses the viewer into their bleak world. Watching this film made me feel like I drove on the backroads instead of taking the interstate or flying to my destination.

I loved this movie and watched it several times.

Agree with you, the slow pace is totally on purpose, slowly it pulls you in the declining poor town's atmosphere and settles you in it to make you feel the same way as the characters feel, kind of a ''no way out'' and desperate situation.

reply

6/10 for me as well, same reasons.

That and an unresolved/unrealistic ending.

Are you out of your mind? The movie began on an incredibly brutal note and pretty much maintained that momentum throughout, albeit there were moments in between with what's known as "drama".
