What was that big eye in the cave?

It certainly never seemed to be explained to me. It was that giant eye that opened up when they walked in front of it. (Reminded me of Sauron fron LotR.)

You're ALL wrong! It was a Sandworm from Dune!

You know, the... Err.... Blind ones.... Hmm.

reply

Maybe a sandworm from Beetlejuice?

Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion.

reply

Naww its definatly a reference to the American Godzilla movie!!

When there is no more room in Hell, remakes will walk the earth!

Agreed.

Look at the link in the post above. It's huge, too big to fit any character in the film. And it's definitely an eye, and the camera dwells on it. So it seems as if it's important. But as others have said, after that scene it's apparently forgotten. My wife thought it was the eye of Sauron, too.

reply

It's not a dropped joke. Like people state its a LOTR's gag. Just like in Fellowship the group is underground and the creators thought it would be funny to put the all seeing eye of Sauron in there.

reply

It'd be very disappointing for that to be the case, but you're probably right.

I know perspective on the animals isn't really adhered to within the physics of reality, but considering the size ratio between the animals and the eye... there's nothing the eye could belong to on earth. The Giant Squid has the largest eye of any animal, at 11 inches. The eye in Rango is easily 5-6 feet.

reply

Did anyone else notice that

A- None of the characters reacted to the eye except Doc.

B- Doc finished off a hip flask (of "cactus juice" I assume) before commenting that it was a "big 'un".

Good chance that rabbit imagined the eye on account of his cactus juice problem.

reply

Well I was expecting something to happen during the film but it's kind of interesting to speculate at this point.

Remember, it was a dry riverbed so it could have been some kind of fish or other creature that buries itself in the lakebottom while waiting for the water to return. They've been known to live for years in drought conditions.

Or it was a Sarlac ;)

reply

It was simply meant to be a large, mysterious creature living under the desert in Nevada. It seemed like a fun idea, so they included it. That is why this movie rocks the *beep*

reply

my vote for answe.

and.. "this movie rocks the *beep*" this is also true.

It's a Great Old One from H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, or a creature related to the Great Old Ones.

The whole desert is a disguised giant frog.

Since this movie was so full of references to other films I thought it was a great LOTR joke

A what? A GRRRRRRRRAILLLL?

I think i know the answer. Have you seen "How to train your Dragon"? Obviously since HTTYD was released while Rango was still in production it may have been a shock for Rango's producers as they were forced to change the script. Remember? HTTYD had a giant dragon forcing the other dragons to raid villages and feed him. It seems Rango's original plot had a giant frog or turtle drinking all the aquifer. That's the logical explanation of many things in the movie like mentioning an aquifer in the first place who obviously was the source of water in the original script, not some LV pipe. Also, beside the things that didn't make sense, there are these unexplained things in the movie: what about the water thrown in the desert for instance and many others, like the entire movie was made from bits and pieces from at least two different movies.

Why they left the eye in? Probably as a memento.

reply

Actually, I also thought it was a reference to LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring. Not only did the eye look like The Eye of Sauron, but also Rango's posse silouetted against the eye looked a bit like the Fellowship of the Ring filin along on their journey (it may well even be a shot from some LOTR poster...) That was my impression.

All these "it was a LOTR reference" posts make me laugh. It has nothing to do with LOTR. It is an exact copy of a scene in Godzilla (1998). In that movie the scientists are underground and walk by an opening. When that happens a massive eye opens that is as large as the opening. The exact same thing happens in Rango. It's even the same proportion in both movies.

Completelly agreed on. Even though I am a huge LOTR - fan, IMHO the eye - reference had nothing to do with Sauron or Peter Jackson's vision of Barad-dûr or anything LOTR related. If one is searching for reference, I definitely suggest checking the Godzilla remake..
