It's woke nonsense...
Overall it's not that bad, for a "predator" movie at least...
I give it a 4.5/10 ⭐

No, it isn't. But for you whiny dudes, everything that isn't straight, white and male-led is "wOkE".
shareIt's not nonsense?
shareof course there's an apparent underlying ideology that clings to the zeitgeist. all the men in the movie are either evil or ignorant and trying to keep her down, just so that she can shine as the underdog who has to prove herself and eventually shows everybody. it's exactly what you expect from a movie in 2022, for better or for worse.
shareAgreed. I only like straight white male-led movies. Like Raiders of the Lost Ark! That movie is the best ever!
shareI mean, it does have a whole lot about a want to be warrior princess even though the Comanche (which is the purported tribe even though it's geographically next to impossible) or Lakota (much more likely given the location) did not have such a practice.
I do wonder why they couldn't get an actual member of the Comanche tribe to play this role, however. Unless we're saying all natives are substitutable, which is pretty offensive in and of itself.
American Indians have always been inaccurately cast by Hollywood. Even in movies that try to do the right thing like Dances with Wolves they end up casting natives from the wrong tribes in the parts as if there is no difference between a Lakota and an Osage or any other tribe. It probably isn't something a white person would recognize but to an American Indian it is like having a Welshman play a Scott without bothering to change his accent.
shareWhy should that matter? Can a blind character only be played by a real blind person? I am Danish. Can I only play Danish characters? It's crazy. These are actors playing fictional characters in a fictional story.
If Native Americans want to make their own films with the correct tribal actors playing the correct tribe then do it.
Stop bothering the rest of us about it, though.
It is a problem when the liberal love to yammer about only a gay actor can play a gay character, only a Hispanic actor can play a Hispanic... You can't be bitching about it in some instances but ignoring it in others. Consistency is what needs to happen. If they don't give a fuck who plays an Indian then bring on the blackface.
shareThere's absolutely nothing woke about this movie. Don't use words you don't understand.
shareOh, you’re big mad, huh?
shareI'm anti-woke, and fucking hate they have to cram diversity in everything, for the sake of it, trumping all logic and better options. It's annoying af, and a cancer on entertainment mediums, such as movies, shows and games atm.
However, this isn't that.
***SEMI SPOILERS***
Don't fucking read anymore if you wanne be spoiled!
Anyways, this actually doesn't enforce the whole "wahman stronk, men weak/incompetent" trope, because she ISN'T the strongest, nor most skillful, hunter. It's shown again, and again, that she's somewhat outclassed in prowess and physical abilities by Taabe, and some of her survival is actually only because "men" interfere, or plain old luck.
However, what she does have, is being smart, tactical, have a wider range of skillsets, adaptability. Which makes sense too, due to her upbringing, and having to fight many times harder for "her right to be what she wants to be". She doesn't take the Predator out, by being the strongest, bravest and skillful warrior. She does it by learning from what she's seen, from the many observations she's made from the confrontations she's seen the Predator in, and sets a trap in the end.
So no truly forced wokeness of any note in this movie.
The movie itself is a 6-6,5/10 and definetly worth a watch - easily, and solidly, the third best movie in the Predator franchise (and the only one I'll allow to be canon in my head along 1 and 2) - there's some glaringly stupid and "cringey" stuff at times, but nothing you can't handle.
I am also anti-woke but many people were mistakenly putting their woke hatred in the wrong place with this film, thinking that because Arnie defeated the Predator in the original, this small girl shouldn't have a chance. Arnie didn't even survive because he was the strongest of his soldiers, we saw how that went in his one on one fight with the Predator. In the end he relied on his smarts to defeat it through the trap he made.
shareYes, it was forced wokeness. Why didn't they have the whole tribe working together to kill it? Why couldn't they have had the siblings work, man and woman, together to kill it. The brother went down awfully quickly if you ask me. And yes, the girl was the only one who knew how to take the predator down. As if. Hell if Billy in the original couldn't do it considering how big he was with all the knowledge he had being a tracker, how did this small framed girl do it with next to no training? Billy was far more able, but he was taken out just as good as Dillon, Hawkins, Blaine, Mac, and Poncho were. The only one the original predator didn't take down was Anna....no threat.
Oh, loved the supposed call back to, "If it bleeds, we can kill it." As if that will make this largely uneventful film any better. And before you jump on me for being a "guy threatened by a woman's narrative," I'm a woman and even I thought it woke propaganda.
Different situation with Billy though wasn't it? Billy resigned himself to trying to take on the Predator on a log, with nowhere else to move to. He never even saw the Predator in hand to hand combat prior to that point and may have thought he had a chance. Then again I expect he knew he'd be sacrificing himself just to buy the others some time. The girl knew her surroundings and had already seen the Predator fighting in close combat. In fact this Predator seemed a lot more hands on compared to the original Predator.
shareIf this "story" takes place in 1719, the roles of women in the Comanche nation were not as warriors, or even warrior-wannabes. Men and women within the tribe had specific roles that did not include this film's WOKENESS. Here are the FACTS of that time:
Men and women among the Comanche Indians held distinct roles. The bands of Comanche that roamed the Great Plains area of the United States in the 19th century adhered to a traditional division of labor, which left women in charge of work related to home and family, while men hunted and fought. Additionally, high-ranking men engaged in trade with Europeans, Mexicans and Americans, often to sell back kidnapped relatives and dignitaries.
Men - Hunting and Herding
Young men tended the tribe's flocks and trained for manhood. Coming-of-age meant the responsibility of fishing and hunting elk, buffalo and other game. After the Comanche acquired horses, they expected their young men to learn horse-riding skills, which could be used both for tracking animals and herding. The Comanche were considered the best horsemen among the Plains Indians.
Men - Warfare
The Comanche used their horses most notably for warfare. Their young men trained to use bows and arrows and spears and shields made from buffalo hide. If rifles were available, the arts of marksmanship had to be learned, as well. Horse-mounted Comanche men went on raids that extended as far south as the jungles of Mexico. On these raids, which might last for months, men occupied themselves with acquiring the transportable goods of whichever people they fought.
Men - Trade
Among the transportable goods the Comanche acquired on these raids were members of other tribes or citizens from Mexico or the United States. High-ranking Comanche men accompanied the armed groups that led these captives to meeting places with relatives and/or diplomats and exchanged them for money or other goods. These high-ranking men were from among the elite leadership of each tribe. A man could rise to such rank by exhibiting prowess in combat.
Women - Gathering Food and Cooking
The Comanche were hunters and gatherers and, as was often the case with such cultures, women were in charge of the gathering. Since the Comanche were a polygamous society, one or more women might be attached to a single man and care for him by collecting nuts, berries and other wild vegetation near their camp. Women prepared meals for their men with the food they gathered and the meat brought home by hunters.
Women - The Home
Women were also responsible for the home, which was usually a tee pee made form hides and wood. They did not simply clean the home. Women had to actually build the tee pee, even if that meant carrying heavy wood and erecting the structure themselves. They were also charged with raising children. Men would take charge of older boys, but women raised the girls and prepared them for marriage and motherhood.
These are immutable facts and cannot be changed to the satisfaction of a WOKE narrative.
As for the comparrison between Billy and this girl, they're valid. No amount of shoving this crap in the watcher's face has any semblance of truth. Billy was an experience warrior who also had Navy SEAL training. He "might" have set himself up as a sacrifice, but his death and action is far more right than this film's allegation a small, frail looking girl can go after a predator two times her size with the lack of fighting skills she had. Tying a rope to a hatchet is not skill. Having high calibre weapons and many clips didn't make a dent in the Predator Dutch and his men faced. A hatchet, bow and arrow, a flintlock pistol? Really? They dumbed down the Predator just so the girl could come out victorious. Sickening.
Yes we know the Comanche women were not traditionally hunters and would be the ones gathering food and cooking. The film actually made this point, that was its overriding theme concerning the lead character, that she wanted to break from the traditions and hunt herself. You can call that woke if you want, but it would have been far more woke if they had just ignored this.
As far as comparisons go to Billy, it would be more suitable to compare with Arnie at the end, because it's definitely valid that Billy had different circumstances around his confrontation with the Predator compared to the girl. He was holding off the Predator on a log, how is his strength and Navy SEAL training supposed to give him the advantage on a log with a Predator, when all he had was a knife? I think he knew he would die but wanted to go out with an honourable death and give the others some time to get to the helicopter.
At the end of the day, you and others are missing the point that it didn't matter whether Billy or Arnie were really strong, or the girl was really small, the Predator was defeated both times by the lead characters outsmarting it and luring it into a trap. Based on the look and the more hands on approach of this earlier Predator, you could argue it was less evolved than the one in the original and therefore slightly more beatable.
At the end of the day, you and others are missing the point that it didn't matter whether Billy or Arnie were really strong, or the girl was really small, the Predator was defeated both times by the lead characters outsmarting it and luring it into a trap.
And the girl laid her own trap for it, without relying on her strength, so the point still stands.
shareAny trap a 90 lbs girl builds isn't going to be deadly enough to kill a 500 lbs space alien. Even Arnold's trap wasn't enough to kill it, only partially cripple it. In order to avoid being killed by Arnold, the Predator set off its explosive.
Technically had Arnold not been over it with the rock, it's possible it could have removed the tree stump and healed up a bit.
Having some little teenage girl set a trap to kill something even Arnold couldn't kill (only incapacitate) just flies in the face of suspending one's disbelief.
Because you think a trap is all about strength. More goes into laying a trap than just mere strength. She made the predator kill itself by the end so the point still stands.
shareArnold's trap was all about strength, and she wouldn't have been able to lay it because she lacks his strength.
The only way a Predator could die to a little girl is because it was stupid.
Arnold's was about strength but as the old saying goes there is more than one way to skin a cat. Strength is not the only way to defeat something. You can set out traps that are effective without completely relying on strength.
Translation you do not like anything other than males as an action hero. Furiosa was a great action hero and did amazing physical things. What I find interesting is both Prey and Mad Max Fury Road specifically are considered good films by the masses. I think this is a problem on your end.
You didn't site your source on that nor did you consider that while most Comanche women were not warriors, it doesn't mean that there none at any point.
This lists some American indigenous female warriors from different tribes.
https://www.notesfromthefrontier.com/post/native-warrior-women#:~:text=Her%20name%20was%20Gouyen.,who%20had%20killed%20her%20husband.
This talks about how women who are not yet mothers may accompany their husbands into battle.
http://plainshumanities.unl.edu/encyclopedia/doc/egp.gen.045
So while this fictional movie of course took liberties, it's not completely unheard of for a young woman to take part in battle.
Did you notice the one common denominator in both those accounts? The articles you linked all took place in the 1800s, AFTER Prey takes place. Before the 1800s it was unheard if im the Commanche nation rhat is depicted in this film. Stop trying to shoehorn. According to the historical record, NO COMANCHE WOMAN was a warrior.
Oh, my source is this: https://www.theclassroom.com/what-were-the-roles-of-men-women-in-the-comanche-tribe-12084080.html
I'm just saying that for a movie, which is fiction, they haven't gone too far out of the realm of possibility.
As for information about Comanche history, I think a lot of it is missing, and mostly recorded by non Comanche people. As for no women ever being a warrior, but having women from other tribes occasionally fight? I think that when needed, it's not impossible to think that all people would want to fight, Comanche or not. I'm not saying that it did happen, I'm just saying that the Comanche could have had a population of up to 30000 in the early 1800s, having a woman want to fight could happen.
Also, this isn't an historical drama.
it was forced wokeness. Why didn't they have the whole tribe working together to kill it?
I hate Tom Cruise films - plot hole!
Remember. If you criticise poor hackneyed writing, you're racist and sexist.
shareWell I'm both a woman and have Indian blood in me. My family has Mohawk blood in them. So I guess I'm dismissed because I just don't like the film.
shareNo only white male incels criticisms are highlighted by Hollywood. Your criticisms will be ignored.
Diverse criticism is not the same as Hollywood pretending they are diverse.
Smart and bestest at medicine, hunting and fighting (basically everything)..
>>>>>>> SPOILER ALERT ≤<<<<<<<
"She isn't the strongest" what movie were you watching, she was basically unstoppable, she technically killed the lion (the movie seems to insinuate that she killed the lion and the brother took credit for it), she fought her male counterpart and only lost because she got sucker punched, she
single handedly killed men who captured her brother.
She went hand to hand with the predator, I'd like to point out that the predator went hand to hand with a bear and killed it with a punch, a fcken punch..
Making the predator cut it's hand wasn't luck..
The predator died from stupidity...
My original statement stands: "Overall it's not that bad, for a "predator" movie at least..."
She beat the crap out of their best warrior - and only lost later when they ganged up on her.
Not the strongest you say? lol
Look - all predator films have plenty of unrealism in them - this film just adds the new normal wokeness into the mix, alongside some history revision. I'm just glad they didn't take the trans route in this one, because you know it's only a matter of time until they start saying trans have existed since the beginning of time ^^
What about the portrayal of the white male conquistadors? Where they incompetent/evil?
Were they not in real life?
shareNo, but whether they were or not is irrelevant, the wokeness of the film can largely be measured by how negatively it portrays straight white men.
Are you being ironic? Can't tell these days.
shareNo. Quote whatever struck you as ‘ironic’ and explain why you thought it so.
"the wokeness of the film can largely be measured by how negatively it portrays straight white men."
I thought you were mocking the right wing nationalist dudes who say shit like this unironically. So you're one of those, eh?
What you quoted there is true, I don’t care who else says it.
Notice how you’ve been indoctrinated to ‘other’ anyone who calls out the woke cult.
Now there goes irony again. You talking about indoctrination when a few years ago no one complained about white male portrayal.
shareA few years ago there was no reason to complain 🤷🏻♂️
shareSo white men were always portrayed as the good guys who saved the day? Man, you're uncultured af.
You bore me. Bye 👋
You just pulled an opinion completely out of your ass, attributed it to me, then left the conversation because you found it distasteful 🤷🏻♂️
Look how insane your cult has made you.
Isn't it why you are offended? Because white men are bad in this movie? Don't back off now.
shareI’ll explain my position so you no longer have any doubt. Wokeness is an evil racist, sexist cult that seeks to destroy Western culture and has infected Hollywood. It especially seeks to denigrate straight white males by swapping existing heroes out of new ‘diverse’ alternatives and portraying straight white males as evil and stupid wherever possible.
Prey is yet another example of the latter, and I’m calling it out. Clear now?
Another radicalized white man online spewing the same shit he read online 😴
Go watch Jordan Peterson on youtube.
What on earth struck you as ‘radical’ about my perfectly common sense position?
Because you believe in the supremacy of the white male race. And when you don't see that reflected on the screen, it upsets you.
shareYou just pulled an opinion completely out of your ass and attributed it to me, again.
Look how insane your cult has made you.
I know your type. I got you to a T like an FBI profiler.
shareThe only thing you’ve ‘got’ are severe delusions based on your cultish indoctrination.
These will get worse as your faith in the cult falls apart and you have to lie to yourself and others ever more to desperately hold onto it.
Let’s watch that play out here…
They weren’t evil. They were quite competent hunters and planned well, but they just couldn’t handle the advance tech.
Oh, and they were French or Canadians.
The heroine won in the end because she observed how the Predator reacted to the hunters and she adapted.
It's woke garbage.
