This movie wasn't made to win awards. Visually, the movie is extremely stunning. The pop up artbook style was incredibly interesting, and it ties into the book Woody Harrelson's character was working on. Once you understand Woody's character, you will understand why the movie looks the way it does, and why certain characters do certain things and act in their ways.
Symbolically, the movie is also extremely interesting. The color symbols themselves from the Red Suit gang to the Gray Proletariats helps you realize just how far and deep Nicola's reign extends; the lower on the totem they are, the more drab the color, and the higher on the totem they are, the brighter the color. The choice of a Woodcutter for Ron Perlman to dress as while he is out was meant to be a hero-reversal type role. In fairy tails, the Woodcutter has acted as a hero (such as in Red Riding Hood), while in this, the director took those two elements and made them evil. There are a many more symbols in the movie, and once you realize just how the come together, you can see that there is a deeper meaning to the movie.
Maybe if people looked at this movie from an intelligent view point, rather than just for Gackt or Josh Harnett, then maybe they would "get it."
Speaking of Gackt, he was the one person who I thought would overact in this, and he was actually VERY good in his role. I just wish that Josh Harnett had acted just a bit more in his role, but overall he did well.
