Michelle a monster?

We get to see the movie through Michelle's eyes and therefore automatically assume she's the hero...but some her manipulations seem to suggest borderline personality disorders.

Howard brings her food which she spurns, tells her he saved her life--which she disbelieves--and then immediately endangers herself and Howard's lives by starting a fire in an underground bunker.

She then sharpens a stake intending to spear Howard ala Vampire Diaries as he attempts to investigate (and to presumably save Michelle, again).

She sociopathically drives Howard to anger by deliberately pushing buttons at the dinner table, toys with Emmett's emotions by falsely coming on to him, and then conspiratorially gets Emmett to perform most of the dangerous work for their escape plan (stealing kitchen implements under Howard's wrathful eye, getting Howard to dispose of the shower curtain, distracting Howard while she made the Hazmat suit, and volunteering to singlehandedly subdue Howard and relieve him of his gun).

Even when the suit was done they knew only one was getting out. So of course, old Emmett volunteers to stay behind...with what would be a supremely pissed-off Howard.

(Makes one wonder if she subconsciously set-up Emmett up to be that "hero" with her carefully emoted story about "freezing under pressure," which precipitates Emmett's rushed confession to Howard and gets him killed? Naughty girl!)

She lies, manipulates, steals, gives Howard a 10-point faceplant in an acid bath, and her only act of kindness is to stitch up Howard's cut--which she in fact, caused.

She then locks Howard in a burning bunker and watches it explode--after killing an organic spaceship with some strategically lobbed firewater to its kisser.

Who knows what havoc she will wreak when she reaches Houston?

Don't edit my word IMDB!! I believe the beep you're looking for is KHUNT.

She lies to and tries to kill a man that kidnapped her and chained her to the wall. Nothing wrong with that, its what everybody would do.

She does not "manipulate" Emmett into anything. She tells him her plan and they work together to try to execute it. What she does - keeping all the evidence in her room - was the truly dangerous part, not Emmett stealing scissors.

You're just a tool, thats all.

Lots of holes in this theory, but its interesting to consider.

I liked how the movie kept Goodman's intentions fairly ambiguous throughout, but by the end of the movie we have enough evidence to assume that he was up to no good.

1) The truck at the gas station looked like his.
2) He definitely ran her off the road, but he was driving the opposite direction from his home, and it doesnt jive with his story about rushing home.
3) He chained her to the wall in a locked room.
4) He was was very aggressive and easily upset by stupid things.
5) The board game where he only referred to Michelle as a "little princess" and a "girl"
6) A girl in his town disappeared that he had photos and bloody earrings from in his bunker. There's no guarantee that he killed her, but he definitely had some connection or interest in her.
7) "help" scratched into the glass on the inside of his bunker
8) He shot Emmitt
9) He freaked out on Michelle when he saw her gas mask

I'm sure there are plenty of others that I missed. For your theory to work, all of those would have had to have been Michelle's imagination or otherwise explained by benign intentions on Goodman's part.

reply

It's just as easy to poke holes in your assumptions:

1) The truck at the gas station looked like his.

It's dark. Without a license plate match or picture of the driver we don't know for sure the truck at the gas station was Howard's.

2) He definitely ran her off the road, but he was driving the opposite direction from his home, and it doesnt jive with his story about rushing home.

He did run her off the road--he admits to this (but not to intentionally doing so). How is it do we know which direction both were going at the time (I'd have to view this a second time).

3) He chained her to the wall in a locked room.

I think it's safe to assume he did this for her safety--he didn't want her squirming around after he set her leg, and he anticipated she would he anxious with the news of the attack outside and the impossibility of her leaving. I can't vouch for locking the room--that doesn't seem hospitable.

4) He was was very aggressive and easily upset by stupid things.

It's a quirk of engineers, and given his fallout and inability to rescue his own daughter and estranged wife, he might be understandably "on edge."

5) The board game where he only referred to Michelle as a "little princess" and a "girl"

This is troubling, but it might have more to do with him grieving the recent loss of his own daughter than confusing Michelle with her.

6) A girl in his town disappeared that he had photos and bloody earrings from in his bunker. There's no guarantee that he killed her, but he definitely had some connection or interest in her.

This is the most suspicious. He might have taken an interest in the case given the similarities between Bridgett (the missing girl) and his own daughter...but we still don't know for sure if Bridgett was for sure locked int he bunker or who abducted her or what happened to her. We have only Emmett's explanation.

7) "help" scratched into the glass on the inside of his bunker

As this was an accessible part of the bunker from the outside, it's possible whoever scratched it was simply deposited and kept in that room. It's also been theorized that it might have been scratched outside the room from someone desperate to get in...

8) He shot Emmitt

He carries a firearm. He's a survivalist. And Emmett--from day one--has been getting on Howard's nerves. Emmett admitted to wanting to subdue Howard set Howard off and he did what he had to do to protect himself and the integrity of his property (he seems to make decisions based upon this basic need: safety for himself and safety of his home). If a burglar broke into your home and threatened to tie you up and you had a firearm, would it be any different?

9) He freaked out on Michelle when he saw her gas mask

He anticipated that she was going to go outside...and endanger himself doing so. I think he had an honest desire to keep her safe, and let's be honest--she was in more danger (come to find out) going outside than staying in the bunker. Unthinking, murderous flying aliens, dog-like creatures that hunted humans on the ground, and other humans that have clearly gone insane from the attacks. He suspected as much and simply wanted to keep her safe for her own good--much as a father would with a child--as well as preserve his own safety and home.

It was useless to chain her, she was injured, she wouldn't have ran away immediately. The chain was a way for award to immediately show that he had the power and that she was his creature.

It's a quirk of engineers, and given his fallout and inability to rescue his own daughter and estranged wife, he might be understandably "on edge."

He might not even have a wife and kid. He did show the picture of another girl and said she was his doughter. Maybe he never had a doughter and kidnap kids to pretend they're his.

It is said in the movie that it is written from the inside.

I'm french so maybe we're wreid, but we don't kill burglars. Moreover he could just easyly chain him in the room. So the fact that he's able to kill Emmett (moreover without any hesitation) is very very disturbing. And he knew Emmett, they worked together so it's even more troubling.

He anticipated that she was going to go outside...and endanger himself doing so. I think he had an honest desire to keep her safe, and let's be honest--she was in more danger (come to find out) going outside than staying in the bunker. He could just destroy the gas mask and explain that to her.

I know you're just doing that for the sake of the argument and I think you have some good points, but all in all, even if Michelle can be considered an extreme survivalist (and I don't really agree with that), Howard is a psychopath.

reply

I'm in complete agreement with you, Link. Howard did show Michelle and Emmett generosity which was spurned by both. At the end when she sets the bunker on fire and Howard grabs her leg from below, his screaming is not one of "Get back here you ungrateful *****!" or "I'm gonna kill you!" he keeps on with "Please don't Michelle, stay with me!"
Howard was correct when he told her that it's not safe to go outside, he was also honest about the sound of the helicopter not being U.S. military.
I'm not saying Howard wasn't mentally somewhat unhinged but then what can one expect after what he'd been through? For me, the film said a lot more about the distrusting and destructive nature of humanity exemplified by Emmett and Michelle than by an alien invasion.

For point 2)

In America cars drive on the right hand lane.
The scratches on his car were along the right hand side.
Upon impact, they were traveling in the same direction or at least facing the same direction.

You'd make a good criminal defense attorney, Link. Is that your occupation?

reply

Heh, perhaps I'm just a prosecuting a-troll-y.

I just wanted to present another side to the story and get people talking. I like the defense for and support against my hypothesis...in short, I just like hearing everyone's perspective.

IMDB has some of the most active and intelligent forum posters. I like to show my appreciation by engaging and interacting with intellects far superior to mine.

reply

Engaging and interacting with people having different perspectives on a deliberately ambiguous movie is fun, but this isn't that kind of movie and trolling to start that kind of discussion is just disingenuous.

Revenge is a dish that best goes stale.

reply

Yea right! Howard wasn't the subtlest of meeting new people either. He was quite aggressive/forthcoming in nature.
He could've made more of an effort to make them not be suspicious a little more... but never. So what do you expect??

Really?

reply

Omg you *beep* idiot... change the topic title for spoilers

Really?

It's not enough that the marketing and poster for this movie prints: "Monsters Come In Many Forms"...?

I don't think I can spoil a poster?

reply

While reading this I was like why has noone even pointed out the tagline for the movie which gives weight to everyones side on who is good or bad. can we all just agree that everyone in this horrid movie (JJ if you read this please stop making this nonsense and stick to the awesome stuff you have done) is in some form a monster

"STAND STRONG, RISE ABOVE"

after killing an organic spaceship with some strategically lobbed firewater to its kisser.

So I take it she should've just let the alien organic spaceship have its way with her, right?

Maybe it was friendly.

Oh God... I LOVE THIS THREAD!

Aside from the trolling... I think you may be on to something. Sure, Howard is way too creepy, but it's never really shown he's a murderer/rapist/psychopath. He's a prepper, I've read some stuff about being ready for the apocalypse and sure, you cannot afford to blink an eye if you feel you're in danger. So... no way he was going to give Emmett another chance. Besides, he knew him longer than Michelle did, he had put up with enough of his tricks. Point for the prepper!!!

Michelle was scared, that's understandable. But from the first minute we see her trying to get out no matter what instead of trying to find out more about what's happening and the risks of getting out of the bunker. Bad girl. No, not bad. Stupid girl!

I wouldn't want to be stuck in a bunker with those other two loons, but when the world is gone and you have no plan, nowhere to go and no supplies, well... you have to make the best of ANY situation.

This movie really is food for thought. It guides everybody into judging Howard as the worst of the worst. But if you really think about it, his only fault was being reaaaaally weird. He was probably harmless and had good intentions, but just like Michelle, the moment he was cornered, he had to defend himself and his home. Please don't hate on me!

P.S. I think Emmett killed the girl. He had access to the bunker before anything happened, he knew the missing girl and he could place the blame easily on the weirdo getting ready for the end of the world.

Rubbish. Howard was a monster, which is what any sane person would assume in her circumstances, and she turned out to be right. Borderline personality disorder is a diagnosable mental illness that has a complex of symptoms which she didn't have. She faked coming on to Emmett so she could steal Howard's keys. She actually performed most of the dangerous work or partly committed to it before Emmett was killed. She didn't completed the suit until after Emmett was killed, etc, etc.
