Hmmm...
I am a fan of Rob Zombie, and I am a fan of his remakes although I'll argue that even though the originals are better and always will be, I think that Rob just understands what he's putting on screen, and it kind of gave TDR and Halloween a sort of guilty-pleasure status. They're fun films, and nothing more.
As for A Nightmare On Elm Street, I think that for this type of remake, they really did want more of a commercial horror flick. I think that Rob would've understood what he wanted, and threw it on screen although the visual elements I think, would be the down part of the film. Rob loves his typical dehumanized, satanic imagery with a gritty texture over the top, which would've worked even with the original's aesthetic, but would've limited the visual range and probably would've just looked a bit tacky. Having said that, Rob is insidiously creative, and the nightmare and nightmare/reality blend sequences would've really been something. Plus, Rob does love his miserable endings.
