Is It Just Me? John Carpenter Clone

If yer old enough to remember... this thing is a dead ringer for old John Carpenter movies (minus Adrienne and the swamp monsters.)

Same synth score. Same 'movie of the week' acting. A LOT of the shots and even the colour grading looks like something he'd do.

I think the critics that like this so much either:
a) watched too many of his movies on HBO as kids

b) have a sweet spot for -anything- 'Texas' and 'Noire'.

It's OK, but just not that great. Trying to hard to make 80's 'chic' again. It was never chic, trust me.

Michael C. Hall is a great actor but I can't quite get past Dexter (yet). Mainly because he's still bulked up. If he was as skinny as Six Feet Under it woulda gone better with the mullet.

Nothing wrong with John Carpenter. At least up until the mid-late 80s.

reply

Only if yer not John Carpenter. :D

I just don't think that style was worthy of such an obvious 'homage'.

reply

The score definitely reminded me of Carpenter in a good way

Yes it's just you.

The title font actually first reminded me of Law and Order - almost the same font, and white with blue glow around it.

reply

Yeah must be a fan. The font was immediately obvious. I think it's cool to nod your head to directors who inspired you.

Noticed John carpenter got a thanks in the credits.

Mickle has gone on record stating that both John Carpenter and Walter Hill were big influences on him here.

Thanks.

Obviously I'm showing my age, but I always find it amusing that younger directors find drive-in quality movies as 'big influences'. I thought Quentin was just an aberration but clearly it's just how younger people roll.

It's really not that good a movie, but if you're below a certain age it will undoubtedly appear innovative. The closest analog I can think of is 'Drive' (a much better movie).

reply

John Carpenter's are "drive-in quality movies"?
Statements like this have nothing to do with age.

reply

He was right about one thing, he is showing his age...a word for that is "senility".

John Carpenter has made some of the most entertaining and original flicks in the 70s and 80s. If you struggle to understand why that would inspire someone then or today, your age should be the least of your problems...

reply

Not really, for Carpenter is still a well known director and a lot of people has seen his work.

Kim Kardashian is very popular too. Lots of very popular things are not worth modeling.

reply

Not sure what that has to do with what I said, for I was saying your age is not showing by knowing who John Carpenter is and what his style is like.

What a ridiculous "point". If thats the best you can come up with just stop trying and embarrassing yourself further.
Kim Kardashian is J. Lopez for "new" generation, just another talentless parasite with large ass. 20 years from now no living soul will know who she was.
Does she sing, act, tame lions or walk on fire? Nobody even knows what she does.

Carpenter is one of the greatest ever "independent" directors and few, if any have had such a great run of movies from middle of the 70s till the end of 80s.
The fact they were made on a shoestring budget and had more bal.s, imagination and originality than most of the blockbusters at that time only makes it more impressive.
He directed, produced, wrote, edited and composed soundtrack for majority of his movies, something very few others have.
Some of his movies are hailed as mastepieces everywhere, like Halloween or The Thing. Halloween was biggest indendent movie success for well over 20 years. Most of the other movies are pure cult, many of them 20-30 or more years ater they came out.
Comparing that to Kim Kardashian just makes you look endlessly pathetic and clueless.
You have yet to make ONE valid point, it looks like just another (old) troll crying for attention...

reply

yeah but one stands above the rest, the one that made him legend,

the one that'll remain atemporal whatever the decade (unless a revolution of consciousnesses happen & we wake the f$ck up)

"they live" (of course)

this being said i believe many people think Carpenter is just a hollywood B movie director with no originality or intelligence or artistic vibes whatsoever. They should get sunglasses (& remove the sausage skins from their eyes).

It's not a great movie, but Carpenter made a few really good ones so I don't know what's your problem with his style other than personal preference...
