Mark my words, this is the news one month later.

reply

Of course I'll mark your words that this is a flop. The movie comes out on October 22nd which is one whole month of your alleged "I'm from the future" prediction.

reply

Let the retarded trolling begin!

reply

Yes, only retards can't see the bomb coming.

I do not understand how this hack Villeneuve gets these gigantic budgets when he clearly is box office poison

reply

Arrival was a success ... 200+ millions on a 47 mil budget - not even close to gigantic.

Blade Runner 2049: arguably will be a success after factoring streaming and dvd/blu ray sales in.

Sicario was a box office success.

Prisoners at least broke even.

So I'm not sure what you mean by being "box office poison". The fact is: he doesn't make "pew pew" movies so yeah, people with short attention span will not go to is movies - too hard/boring.

reply

He is not as deep as you think he is just a cliched PRETENTIOUS hack that directs post modernist BOREFESTS ...Blade Runner 2049 lost money even Ridley Scott bashed him for making it too fucking long and boring

reply

Did I say that he is very deep?

I'm not a fan of his BD 2049 (i think it was quite meh and I don't think it was necessary) and his Arrival didn't impress me either.

I'm just pointing out that he is NOT a box office poison and some reasons for that.

And anyway, IT IS way deeper than StarWars Last Jedi which represents a box office success. I would say deeper than any of the sequels ... and the success of those can only be attributed to 1 fans, 2 star wars was NEVER a deep story.

And I hope Dune is not a Star Wars story, fortunately the Dune books are more deep than anything in the SW universe. So yeah, based on that alone i don't think it will be a box office success (will not bring a billion $) but i hope it will not be a failure so the saga can continue.

reply

He is poison.

The only movie earn money is Arrival.

2049 is a huge bomb.

Sicario: 80m/30m. I wouldn't say this is a bomb, but it barely broke even.

Prisoners: 122m/46m. Barely broke even.

reply

80m/30 mil means it made money ...
Same with Prisoners.

Maybe not a box office success but those movies at least made money.

So no, I wouldn't consider him poison ...

reply

If it does, it can only be due to white people (aka white supremacists). This sort of thing has cropped up before, you know. And it has always been due to white people.

reply

Yeah, like in 1984 when "huh white supremacists" caused Fincher's Dune to bomb. Right?

reply

I'm in agreement with the OP. Look who the lead is for Pete's sake. Casting still matters, or is the size of the budget all that matters?

reply

F9 has made 700 million so far and still hasn't gotten the dvd money made for it.It will do a billion just like Dune.

reply

Honestly, I'm not even sure why they're remaking this film. Although I did like the first one, it didn't do well at the box office. In order for this to do well, it has to be way better than the original and with Tim Chalamet playing the lead, I can't picture this being better than the '84 film.

But it should be interesting to see what happens. Not getting my hopes up though.

reply

I still haven't seen the original. I've read the novel a few times but I've heard such wildly different opinions on the film, I've been reticent to watch it.

reply

Trevor,

Unfortunately I haven't read the novel, so that might have been to my advantage. So, as an outsider looking in, I felt a pretty strong connection to the characters in Dune, it's a very VERY character driven movie. But to me, there was something quite mysterious about the whole thing and I found it to be an interesting movie. It's probably a hit or miss though, some people are just going to hate it because of it's artsy style, and some are going to love it for it's artsy style. Back in that day, not many "arthouse" films were being made, I would call it a mixed bag that falls somewhere between Star Trek and a war film like Patton or The Big Red One. If that makes any sense...

What's the novel like?

reply

I mean yeah that ain't exactly a hot take prediction. It's a pretty hardcore sci fi movie, those don't have mass audience appeal, we're still in the middle of a pandemic, theaters aren't even close to recovering and operating at a pre covid capacity, it's releasing on HBO Max day 1. Anyone with a brain can see that will be a recipe for low box office numbers. Doesn't mean it has the potential to be amazing though. Denis has yet to make a bad movie and BR2049 is incredible.
