Why so much hate
I actually liked it; good enough plot, great special effects. Nothing groundbreaking, but it wasn't bad.

I go back and forth with this movie. I don't think it's terrible and I can say that with certainty. I just watched it again and I can also say I somewhat liked it.
There are things that I wish they would have done differently. I agree with those that say they shouldn't have tackled two villains in the first movie. In doing so I feel like they rushed the development of both of them. They probably should have focused on Hector in the first and then picked up with Paralax in the second and then Sinestro in the third.
It's disappointing that this turned out this way. GL is one of my favorite super heroes...has been since I was a kid. I hope we see him brought to the big screen again soon.
American Horror Story Season 6: Donald Trump
This movie should be studied for years to come as to the prime example of herd/mob mentality of movie goers.
No matter how bad you think the movie was, it bombed worst than the following comicbook "gems": X-Men Origins Wolverine, Spider-Man 3, Iron Man 2 & 3, Men in Black 2, TMNT, Hulk, F4, etc.
Was this really THAT MUCH worst than any of those? The Iron Man movies made a billion dollars each... The last 2 were utter crap... But why then?! Because socially, it's "cool" to go see Iron Man and rave about it to friend and colleagues, all over social media, etc.
But for some reason, Green Lantern was never considered cool. It's an awesome and deep character, one of DC's best, that no one knows about. It wasn't featured in movies before. It didn't have a former-Hollywood-bad-boy-turned-good-boy-feel-good-story-of-the-hour-and-media-darling as the main actor. It didn't exist in any established & successful universe.
The critics also decided to gang up on it because the Marvel and Transformers love affair was at its highest. Everyone wanted a mindless mash up of big budget action and silly comedy. Even though GL was extremely faithful to its comic origins, again, it simply wasn't cool enough for someone to get up and say, "hey wait a second, this ain't that bad... We love Transformers, we made Spiderman3 a $1B, but we hate this??"... It was too new, too different, too deep for critics to understand. No one wanted to even try, so they trashed it.
And this mentality is prevalent in all facets of life... School, music, fashion, etc. Humans are mindless followers of the trend. And back in 2011, it was trend to love Marvel and trash DC at any cost (except TDK trilogy, which lived outside the conventional DC universe)... So kids to adults, it was cool to hate on this.
And then there's the international box office, where it did even more horribly. That again reflects the lack of knowledge of anything DC other than Batman/Superman.
I've seen the movie a few times. I pretty much seen all modern comicbook movies and summer blockbusters. Despite its flaws, it's far, far, far from being the worst of the bunch and deserved much better. Mob mentality simply killed it.
I agree that the movie wasn't that bad. It was a lot better than the god awful The Amazing Spider-man 2 and TMNT while X-Men Origins: Wolverine wasn't exactly anything to rave about either. It might have helped that I watched the movie without having any preconceptions as to what to expect from it having never read the comic and knowing little beyond the character than that his alter-ego was Hal Jordan and he had a magic ring. An acquaintance of mine who is a comic book fan and familiar with Green Lantern agreed with me that the film although nothing special but still thought it was a decent enough. I suppose it's just a case of people wanting and expecting different things from those things that they love.
It was the same with the first Fantastic Four movie which got panned mercilessly by a large contingent of Marvel fans. Again I thought that it wasn't that bad although it had it had it's obvious flaws. It could be that some people went in to it with too high expectations and when you do that you sometimes end up hating a movie more than it deserves. I however didn't think it was any better or worse than Thor or it's equally mediocre sequel which although neither movie being critically lauded over weren't subjected to the mauling FF received.

I love the comic and had a very hard time watching the film (4/10). Barely anything works and the film lack a tone, joy, accuracy to the source material or interesting characters so i am glad that it flopped and made way for a re-assessed reboot. The sadly cancelled GL TV show (8/10) did it right though and the 2 toon films were further decent.
shareSame here, it wasn't that bad. I was entertained. I'm glad I'm not as picky as a lot of people.

the movie is not bad. it is only the bad Karma , of Rayn, Blake, Sacrlet issue that turned the film a laughing stock.
I know that there are at leat 30 more movies that are even worse than this. Example, Batman vs superman, but Karma is a bitch.
this film (green Lantern) isnt bad.
I don't think it matters too much at this point. But I think Ryan Reynolds was thankful that it wasn't a success because he said dreaded making this movie and would've hated it if he had done a sequel.
shareThis whole thread is maximum level of cope.
It's astonishing the excuses, and gas lighting that came out to excuse this mess of a movie.
