The Ending

I have never felt this robbed in my life. It's probably just me, but the ending is pretty freaking outrageous. Let me know if you guys liked the twist or not. Great movie til the end for me.

It wasn't just the ending, it was the whole thing. Good actors but poorly written, not enough character development to give a crap about anyone. I was rooting for the credits.

SPOILERS FOLLOW!!! (WELL, DUH, THE THREAD READS "THE ENDING").

Well, I guess I'm dumb. Yeah, I get the twist and all. But what was all that nonsense at the VERY end, with the phone call and the two women staring off into the middle distance (ie directly into the camera) with very meaningful, intense looks. Does the cop's daughter know his partner killed him, and is she coming after her? Which of course she can do now, because she can track her cell phone call? Which of course the partner, having been a cop, knows. So she WANTS her to come? WTF???

THIS is the ending I want explained! ^_^

I'd also like to know why all three babies looked to be about the same age. Darryl's baby should have been almost a year old, not an infant like the C-section baby.

The director must have realized what a piece of crap he was making, so he tried to come up with cool ending. Instead, the ending made this generic yawnfest into a pile of *beep* generic yawnfest.

reply

In the director's cut, the director slices the writers jugular and then shoots himself.

The ending sucked. It was a excellent thriller up to that point but the "twist" just felt tacked on and unnecessary. It added nothing worthwhile to the film, only detracted from it.

Just learn to accept how the story unfolds the way the director intended or stop watching movies all together.
Why do people always try to alter the story in their minds? I don't get it. Of course there are ways in which I would have chosen a different twist but I was not the one who made this movie. Respect the director/writer for the way they worked things out but most of all just enjoy what you're seeing. Much more fun that way.

I personally loved the twist. I thought it was right up there with the twist in The Sixth Sense. I enjoyed the movie, but the twist just made it that much better.

I didn't realize I was wrong to like this movie until I got on IMDb and found so many folks who say the movie sucked. LOL

Seriously, great movie. Not perfect, but great movie just the same.

I just watched the film and thought it was one of the better serial killer thrillers I have seen in a while and one of the best John Cusack films in recent years. The ending was a bit improbable but OK

reply

Just watched this last night.

It committed one of the most heinous writing crimes, in my opinion. One fairly obvious clue, with the rest of the clues so well hidden that they actually weren't clues at all, therefore when the twist comes, the filmmakers resort to going back and showing you all of the scenes that were supposed to be clues, only now, this time, with a bit of additional footage to explain to the audience why it was a clue. Simple bad plot device and writing at that point. An interesting, somewhat unique thriller up until the twist. Then a feeling as though the filmmakers are saying "Ha-ha! Gotcha!" when in fact they did not, because the viewer is left unfulfilled and the filmmakers are left having to try and explain to you why they were clever. Good cast, but I suggest not wasting your time. In addition, as for what the twist actually was, it was beyond ridiculous.

I am an incredibly forgiving movie watcher, so a film has to really, really insult me for me to really put it down.

Terrible, Terrible ending. I rejoined IMDb after 10 years just to comment on this. Horrible. SpaceTraveler19 explains the convoluted plot device as well as anyone. Someone saw this coming? I have my doubts.

Not to mention the tired clichés used in “police procedurals”. The insertion of the two detectives in the Swat team raid…leading or just being involved. This never makes sense to have a “team” allow two relatively untrained individuals jump in the stack. Just never happens, or shouldn’t. You have a crew of heavily armed and armored individuals with some training together, and allow the “lead detectives” to jump in? So very “Law and Order”, one of the worst offenders of this stupid drama device. I suppose any consultants go out for pizza on this and the other huge gaff. The “I’m the only guy who can do this” bit where instead of calling for the closest officers to respond to the house to save your daughter’s life – (I always think of Gary Oldham saying “Bring me EVERYONE” in the Professional when this happens)…no, the lead drives like a maniac and the two heroes clear a huge house alone. Nuts. And this movie perfectly illustrates why that isn’t done…

I’m a big John Cusack fan, but this movie just limped along, goofy move following goofier move. And any resemblance to this and a true story shares the same connection of Ed Gein and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

How could you not see it coming?! It was obvious, couldnt of been more massive hints tht she was involved!

reply

I didn't see any hints, unless you see it in hindsight.

reply

You didnt see any hints?!! They couldn't of made it more obvious! Did you not think "why are they randomly zooming in on her books about fertility issues" then a few minutes later having a scene in the abductor's dungeon where we learn that he's obsessed with producing babies??!!

- Then her constant desperation to prevent Cusack from working on the case and doing things like interrogate the nurse?

- Her random chat about how a "girl" had gone missing in her hometown and she had nobody to look for her. Followed by flashback scene of abductor driving along a road in random town picking up random girl!!!

These things only stick out in after seeing the movie. It may have had something to do with me thinking it was a "truth based" story for some reason. Frankly, the thing was all over the place.

If you saw it, kudos to you.

We all have to agree that it was a good movie overall. I liked the twist, even though i found it a little far fetched.. Stockholm syndrome at it's best.. lol. What i mostly liked about this film, was that the detectives had the clues and they could fit them together (and without having her sabotage her partner and stuff). Not like in some other movies that it takes them days to see the obvious.. I am really glad that they didn't stick to the "original" ending..
And why did it take them so long to release it anyway?
