When was the last time a blockbuster flopped this bad both critically and commercially?

I know we've had some flops this year, but nothing quite on this level in a while.

Godzilla (1998)

Demotion Man and Judge Dredd (94, 96)

Batman and Robing (1998)

Heaven's Gate (1980)

Howard the Duck (1986)

I'mm trying to think of some more and but having a hard time typing.

There's about 100 more I could mention...

Demolition Man is a good movie , and it did alright in box office.

Batman & Robin and Godzilla weren’t expected to be critical masterpieces, which is quite unlike Joker 2 (a sequel to a movie that got nominated for several Oscars). Batman & Robin also broke even at box office

reply

Demotion Man was GREAT. I still enjoy watching it.

reply

"Godzilla" 1998 doesn't fit because it was the ninth highest-grossing film domestically that year and the third highest-grossing film worldwide. Sure, it underperformed domestically, but it made a decent profit worldwide.

On a personal level, it's the best Godzilla flick I've seen, not that I've seen many (and I realize it's an alternative Godzilla).

Cats (2019)

Have we all forgotten about 2023, The Year of the Flopbuster?

reply

huh?

megalopolis (mega)flopped just a week ago

reply

Expectations were not as high for Megapolis. Joke just a few months ago was projected to open at or near $100 million domestically, and they are heading for $40-45 mil right now

reply

Difference is Megalopolis is a self funded passion project that everyone expected to flop for months now.

Joker 2 was tracking for a $100+ million opening weekend 2 months ago.

reply

Stop making excuses for flops. Just because Megalopolis didn’t have as much hype as Joker 2, doesn’t mean it wasn’t a major flop. I’d thought you of all people would know better.

reply

I'm not making excuses, but there is a clear difference that Megalopolis was expected to flop and Joker 2 was sequel to a billion dollar movie that performed WAY below expectations.

reply

The Marvels
The Flash
Indiana Jones Dial

reply

Those are all 'fresh' on Rotten Tomatoes whereas Joker 2 is rotten.

reply

Matrix 4

reply

Somehow it's 'fresh' but absolutely deserves to be rotten along with those other films you mentioned.

reply

Since Matrix Revolutions wasn’t good, the hype was Matrix 4 was a little more subdued. The Wachowski brothers (or sisters) also keep making bad movies too, which influenced expectations

reply

I can't think of many at all, films like Wonder Woman 1984 shouldn't count because they were released in the pandemic when most cinemas were shut. Terminator Genisys was not well received by critics (26% on Rotten Tomatoes) but it still managed to gross $440 million on a $155 million budget which still fell short of it's break even point when you factor in marketing.

reply

Did gaga take a dump on screen? If so it might be the reason it bombed. If not it might be the reason it bombed

reply

I'm 50, I honestly can't remember such a bad reaction from such a large majority to such a highly anticipated movie.

I remember the reaction to some Shamalanadingdong movies being very disappointing, but the anticipation levels were nowhere near as high, for example.

reply

Yeah, all I could think of was Terminator Genisys but the anticipation for that wasn't as high as Joker 2, although Arnie returning to the franchise did get fans excited. The trailer however spoiled a big twist and also you could kinda tell it was going to be a crappy cash-grab.

Joker 2 had good trailers but the buzz was numbed a bit when people started finding out it was a musical.
