shareI'm pretty sure Todd didn't want to do a sequel, the studios pressured him and he decided to do a crappy movie to sabotage it

shareI don't buy it either. A similar situation occurred when Lou Reed released the execrable "Metal Machine Music" in 1975. Rumors abounded that he recorded this unlistenable heap of noise as a big FU to RCA records. Reed denied that, stating (plausibly) that he'd never record a purposefully lousy record just to make a negative statement about someone or other. As for Phillips, I believe that he didn't want to do a Joker sequel. When he was made an offer he couldn't refuse for a project he didn't care about, he decided to take a risk and do something completely unexpected and didn't care as much as he normally would whether audiences would respond favorably to it.
