If you could go back in time and view 3 acts from Woodstock

Who would they be?

I'd go with:

1. Jimi Hendrix
2. The Who
3. CCR

Jefferson Airplane would be a close 4th.

I went back and watched some of the Woodstock performances. The Who were head and shoulders above everyone else with their performance....and they thought it was one of their worst shows! I just wish there was footage of Pete knocking Abby Hoffman off the stage with his guitar!

Richie Havens
The Who
Santana

To me, the question is not just about who's the greatest performer, but who turned in a truly great performance.

I adore Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead, but both groups by their own admission turned in some really substandard performances.

Hendrix is a different story. It's heretical in most quarters to say his Woodstock performance was a bit lackluster, but as somebody who still has every note and nuance of his four or five best studio albums stored in his brain-- from more listenings than I could possibly count, I just don't think he was ever at his best for any live performance. Whereas in the studio, he was the consummate professional's professional, and perfectionist's perfectionist. But if I could cheat the time machine and get to sneak in a fourth option, I'd be more than happy to risk proving myself wrong.

The Who
Jimi Hendrix
Sly and the Family Stone

I'd be into the seeing Airplane too but I'd rather catch one of their Fillmore East sets from November '69 as heard on Sweeping up the Spotlight and the bonus tracks on the late 90's reissue of Volunteers.

1. Santana
2. Joan Baez
3. Jimi Hendrix

But probably I'd enjoy more from the whole atmosphere, the comraderie and fellowship.

If I went back in time, I'd see more than 3 acts. But my list is the same as the OPs.

Hendrix
Who
CCR

Wasn't Joni Mitchell also at Woodstock? Her too.

reply

1. hendrix

2. the airplane

3. the who

gotta say...
4. shankar

my favorite period in u.s. history (bar none). really the "golden age" of rock in the u.s., too. talk about good 4th of july films.

gregory 70310.

Joni Mitchell wrote the song "Woodstock" as a consolation to herself for not being able to go.And I think David Crosby said she came the closest of anybody capturing the spirit without having been there physically. I think Ang Lee is up there too. Cheers!

Joni wasn't at Woodstock cause it conflicted with a taping of the Dick Cavette show she was scheduled for at the time. She did appear at the 1970 Isle of Wight festival.

reply

Easy. In order...

1. The Who
2. Canend Heat
3. Janis Joplin

Not that I wouldn't have given my right arm to see a whole host of others, such as Bert Sommer, Ravi Shankar, Country Joe & The Fish, Jefferson Airplane (who sounded fine to me, sorry!)...

And, God thank you, I'm not the only one who wants to finally see Pete send Hoffman flying off the stage!!!

reply

Jimi

Janis

Carlos

reply

First of all Jefferson Airplane.

The other two would be nearly impossible to decide... It's a toss up between Arlo Guthrie, Santana, Joe Cocker, Ten Years After, Janis, Jimi, Bert Sommer, Johnny Winter, Country Joe, and several others.

reply

Sha Na Na.

Yes, I'm kidding.

1) Jimi Hendrix
2) Janis Joplin
3) Jefferson Airplane
Honorable mentions: Grateful Dead, the Who, CCR, John Sebastian, Santana, Sly and the Family Stone, CSN, Canned Heat and everyone else (except perhaps Sha Na Na ... actually, I'd love to have seen them too).
