5.8 on IMDB is way too low.

That's a rating for one of those forgettable Netflix movie.

This is a very well made thriller with an original idea that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

reply

I really enjoyed the movie but I think 5.8 is a fair rating. Better than "average", and that it is!

reply

Average is at least a 6.

reply

lol I mean, sure if that's what you wanna believe.

reply

It's not about beliefs. It's a fact.

reply

lol what?
It's fact that 6 out of 10 is an average score?

reply

Yeah. 7 is an ok film. While 8 and above are good films.

reply

I would say 5 is an ok film. 6-7 are definitely better than "average". And yeah, I'd agree that 8+ would be good.

I just think it's silly that OP is arbitrarily acting like calling "6" average is a fact or something.

reply

When I see 5, I don't even bother because you can rate it for the acting, cinematography, directing but it would still be a bad film. Most 6-7 films here on imdb are tolerable to average. There are exceptions like underrated films.

reply

I agree. I would give it a 7.

reply

I gave it a 5..

At this point, I'm beginning to think people just hate on M. Night Shyamalan out of habit. This thing was hardly a classic, of course, but from the ratings I was seeing (including IMDb's) I was expecting something atrocious (another Glass, for instance lol). But it turned out to be a fun and interesting Twilight Zone-ish film. At the least, I'd give it a 6.5.

Meanwhile, Lifetime-worthy Bollywood melodrama keeps repeatedly hitting the IMDb Top 250.

reply

Shyamalan bias is totally a thing.

But to be fair, people don't seem to respond well to Twilight Zone-ish films. Modern mainstream media doesn't really do well with more nuanced, subtle cinematic experiences, I feel like.

I'm disappointed that you didn't like Glass. But have you seen: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radius_(film)

I recently ran into this, the trailer intrigued me. I ended up enjoying the move very much. A bit low budget, and certainly very simple, and I couldn't help but feel like this was the sort of twilight zone-esque, speculative scifi stuff that I've always enjoyed but feel like I don't really get anymore.

reply

No, I've not heard of it. But I'll definitely give it a look. I've always had a big soft spot for the Twilight Zone-esque (even B-grade stuff haha). I don't know if it's just coincident or if there's some sort of more rational correlation, but I actually find that oftentimes a lower budget almost seems to help with these types of movies (Coherence, for instance, comes to mind). I suppose it may be due to the fact that the entirety of the film's pleasure typically has to hinge on its interesting premise rather than something less cerebral like star power or cool effects.

But anywho. I'll give it a look. Thanks.

reply

Agree, but sadly IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes are not relevant anymore.
They either have paid reviews and ratings, or those are made by people who think Kingsman is a mindblowing movie.

Sadly, this is the new normal.
This movie should be somewhere between 6.9 and 7.2 imho.

reply

I agree. I rated it a 7/10.

reply

Great concept, good production and a full story arc, at least 6.5 and I think if had a more dramatic ending would be 7+. I wanted the hotel staff to be punished more, maybe a taste of their own medicine! I agree like an extended Twilight Zone episode we need more concept cinema like this.

reply

I actually really liked it. In fact, I like a lot of Shyamalan's films except for Glass. I think a lot of people simply dislike and like to troll on Shyamalan.
