Unlike most of you (I'm assuming), I only stopped on this movie BECAUSE of Cameron Diaz. I was channel-flipping and saw she was in it so I watched a few minutes (what I can say, I like looking at Cameron Diaz...). Anyway, I ended up watching the whole thing because it's actually a much different movie than what I thought it would be (more of a sprawling family drama than a 'chick flick').
I thought she was great... I was actually surprised by how good she was. Maybe those who read the book can't buy it because of a pre-conceived notion of that character, which happens, but otherwise I don't see how people can say she was terrible. I bought the desperation and pain and anguish she was giving off. And let's be fair, this is a pretty huge departure from what she usually does, so especially considering that, I thought she was good.
I thought the whole cast was great. I was actually surprised the movie didn't end up on the awards shows radar, they love stuff like that. If anything the girl playing Kate should have gotten a golden globe nomination or something.
The first one now will later be last, for the times they are a'changin'...
