Best/Worst movies from books...

My two favorite have got to be Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and To Kill A Mockingbird. Two that I would love see made are Flowers for Algernon and The Catcher in the Rye. The latter will probably never happen being that J.D. Salinger was adament about not having any of his works made into motion pictures. Any favorites? Ones you hated? Suggestions for future ones?

I am looking forward to seeing one of the greatest science fiction novels (The Stars, My Destination by Alfred Bester) being made into a film, as it is listed as a project on the iMDb. I have heard there may be a film or television version of this novel under another name, such as "Tiger, Tiger", but I have never come across it.
From novels already filmed, I'd say the earliest cinematic version of "Lord of the Flies" may have been more gripping than the book. Having said that, I'd like to revisit both.

Best I've seen this year: Thor

Yes, that's adapted from many great books.

Little Children by Tom Perotta. Saw the movie first, and it was a good adaptation, although the book is even better!

I just finished reading Never Let Me Go, which was an amazing read, so I look forward to checking out the movie.

check out veronica mars - seriously, it's an amazing show!

I've read "Vision Quest" so many times. No literary masterpiece or anything and I don't even like wrestling but I just connect with the characters. Louden Swain is so sweet. Matthew Modine made a great Louden Swain but the movie "Crazy for You" was a huge disappointment. Carla was too butch and the ending was completely different. I wanted to see Louden in his purple suit at prom!! Hang on.. was it purple??

I adore "To Kill a Mockingbird" both book and movie. Don't know if I could bear a remake!!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned "A High Wind in Jamaica"? I love that movie. Quite close to the book. Pretty old now. Sure wish I could find it on DVD.

Oh, I've just thought of another huge disappointment.... Hunting and Gathering by Anna Gavalda was a great read. Anyone know it? The movie was just nothing.

I liked the first Narnia book to film, but not so much the sequel.

Stuart Little was a disappointment, as well as Charlotte's Web.

Game of Thrones on HBO is an excellent adaptation of the books, a lot better than many films.

Good
Charlie and the Chocolat factory (both editions are good), To kill a mockingbird, Lord of the Rings (was very apprehensive but pleasantly suprised)

Slumdog millionaire worked too

I remember a John Irving book being filmed.... I never saw it but I think it is quite difficult to get the feel of the book right on screen.

Bad....
Hitchhikers guide..... it just wasn't crazy enough and too crazy at the same time
Kiss before dying, the whole point of the book was that you didn;t know who was the killer throughout the book.
And let's not forget that awful adaption of Shakespeare's masterpiece, 10 things I hate about you.....

I'm not crazy I'm just not your kind of sane

I haven't read the book, but I liked the movie, in particular, DeNiro's character.... what did you think?

My faves are The Godfather, and To Kill A Mockingbird. When I read the Godfather book, I realized how great the casting choices for the movie had been. Coppola captured many elements of the book, such as the principle of omerta. A Simple Plan is a good one also.

My least favorite is The Joy Luck Club. I don't feel that the movie's theme followed the story(-ies).

The Town, a novel into film directed by Ben Affleck. Very true to the book and very well done. Affleck actually made a 4 hour version of the film as his rough cut, including a lot of detail from the book. He had to cut it down to 2 hours, 8 minutes for theatrical release, but a director's cut is on the Blu Ray DVD.
