IMO, was Columbus Short's portrayal of Little Walter! He did such a great job that I think his scenes are the only ones worth watching in the entire film! To me, the film is kind of pointless and without structure! I also believe that they over-hyped Beyonce's portrayal of Etta James. She did an okay job, not good or great, just okay!
Yeahh he did do a splendid job.. That was something I wasn't expecting from him.. But the movie in all was just okayy.. and Beyonce's performance was great to see the long way that she has come from Carmen:the hip hop opera are something.. & the fact that her personality is a total opposite
I agree. He gave the strongest performance in the film. They should have pushed him for a Supporting Actor Oscar nomination but seeing how the film was barely promoted, even by Beyonce, it's a lost opportuniy.
I think it's a lost opportunity as far as award accolades. But, even if an actor is in a barely recognized movie (as far as box office), the film community still notices. And, even if the movie itself isn't given the best remarks, then if a performance stands out, the actor gets a larger amount of scripts thrown at them. Which sometimes lead to a bigger and more noticeable role. So I think Columbus will be taken a lot more serious now. I'm just waiting on Jeffrey Wright's time to noticeably shine.
True that! But you've got to give Jeffrey Wright his do!
My goodness....I was so mesmerized by his performances as Muddy Waters!
Check out the scene in the studio when he and Lil Walter were laying tracks for "40 Days." His body language, the way he looked, held the guitar, posture; I actually thought he was singing, and was totally enthralled by his performance!
Another great performance from Mr. Jeffrey Wright!!
The scenes where they were actually performing were great. Even though I love Etta James songs, and Beyonce did her thing, but all of her songs were fully performed. I wanted to see the entire performance of 40 Days & 40 Nights, Juke, Smokestack Lightnin', and a lot of the other ones. Hopefully, when the dvd comes out, they have a lot of extras.
Good point! If the DVD doesn't hold a lot of extras, that will surely be an opportunity missed. I would love to see the cast shine some more and maybe even goof around "in character". Bring it on...
true there were several artistic liberties taken, lots of facts distorted. Moreover it was very strange that Phil Chess is not even mentioned.
All in all however, this is a great movie.
Eammons who plays Howlin Wolf is incredible. I went straight to the record shop and bought three CDs. Of course if you want to hear any Howlin Wolf cuts all you have to do is listen to; Led Zeppelin Rolling Stones Stevie Ray Vaughan AC DC The Beatles Eric Clapton Jeff Beck The Who and a host of others.
I think the film showed how these artists were not paid in a way that would enable them to establish their own credit. Imagine not paying your own mortgage, the #1 expense of most adults. I felt that Muddy was fighting it in his own mind while Howlin' Wolf had no problem taking responsibility for standing up and getting paid. You have to give James Brown for later taking total control, being the boss, of his own career and business.

Columbus Short was absolutely the best thing in this movie. I was very surprised. I'd only remembered him from that stupid college movie "Accepted" with Justin Long. I just figured he was another young actor who would play in those type of adolescent comedy movies. Didn't take him for such a serious actor. He's got an impressive resume and did an excellent job here. Future Oscar material.
I was coming here to say how great this film was, but that Columbus Short as Little Walter really stood out. He was great! And he was so pretty with that perm! LOL! I couldn't get over how great he was.
Also the actor who played Howlin' Wolf... Eamonn something was great in his small role. I liked everyone in it, but I must say I was a bit disappointed with Beyonce as Etta. It didn't seem genuine. Still love you B, just didn't think she stood out in this role. I'm anxious to see her in Obsessed.
The problem with Beyonce is she gets these great opportunities to shine, but her costars always end up outshining her. It happened witd Dream Girls and Jennifer Hudson, and now this film with Columbus and this Eamonn guy and I even liked Adrian Brody's portrayal, but it wasn't one of his best, either. Overall this movie was pretty good.
Columbus deserved a nomination for something... he was that good. Sad what happened to Little Walter. TI see the real Little Walter was handsome in his younger days, well, he started to look older before his time due to living a really hard life.
I'm loving everything Columbus is doing. He was great in Stomp The Yard, THis Christmas, and Quarantine. Can't wait to see his new stuff.
