I'm sorry but this movie was stupid.
I watched it with an open mind too.
sharewhat was stupid about it?
shareThe choices the characters made. The system of the law depicted. The way plot unfolded.
shareI don't know what you mean by saying the characters' decisions were stupid. Are you referring to the motivation for the main character getting wrapped up in the cult?
The law system was a hypothetical. Like every sci-fi and/or horror, there is some out of this world circumstance that the characters must deal with in order to progress the story. How they go about it is what is compelling making the audience question "what would I do?"
All of the Cronenberg's filmography is like this. Not really sure what you were expecting going into it. Maybe you are unfamiliar with their work?
The cult is just one of the bad decisions the character made.
The law system was unworkable. If a foreigner could buy his way out of any crime there via the doubles, the locals would be quickly diminishing in numbers. The only way this would be workable is if all the locals were doubles themselves made for the resort guests to abuse.
How they go about it is not compelling nor making me question what i would do, because the only reason they were into these circumstances is because they made bad decisions to begin with.
The premise is pretty daft. If a country was able to invent human cloning there are a hundred better things they could do with the technology than have them immediately executed as substitutes for tourists who can then commit further crimes with impunity.
shareMaybe it wasn't technically, maybe it was something supernatural. There was certainly occult and spiritual imagery and themes.
