Would anyone be dumb enough to work in 'Society'?

Ok, so you're going to inject nanosh_t into my head that replaces my brain cells, and then some random person who doesn't give a crap about my well-being is going to control me and I'll have tons of random sex with other people (men or women or both or who knows what but you can almost guarantee I won't enjoy it) and get every STD you can imagine (why would my controller care about protection?) ... I'll also most likely be severely injured in the process because the klutz controlling me will run me into a door or fall down a flight of stairs.

Where do I sign up?

Would people really be dumb enough to do this to themselves? Even for money?

I remember reading a long time ago "I wouldn't want to be the first one to beta-test Microsoft bloodstream 1.0" -- referring to nano medicine.

The death row convict bit I could buy, that makes sense.

But not "society." Even though some people do practically live in that world already with Second Life.

It's spelled Raymond Luxury Yacht, but it's pronounced 'Throat-Warbler Mangrove'

reply

Obviously not some one like you but I'm sure there are a lot of thrill-seekers that would do sign up... they explained it in the movie; sounded completely feasible to me... they also had people committing crimes so they could wind up on death row to get in on the shooter game..

Ultimately, this was a fable based on the current state of affairs and possible progression of technology/gaming but... is it realistic that people would sign up to be controlled in real-life situations? Absolutely.

"The way I tried to rationalize it, all of the people in the "Society" were people who had hit rock bottom in their lives and, at that point, were willing to do anything to make some money. I likened the members of the "society" to modern-day prostitutes, willing to sell their bodies to those willing to pay for the pleasure. If you noticed, during the several close-ups of people's faces, you could see the look of dread, pain, and disgust in the eyes of those being controlled.I do not believe that the people being controlled where as happy with their lifestyle as the program's creator (forgot his name) tried to depict during his on-air interview at the beginning of the film."

"Heres the thing, while the job might be atrocious. Some people may not have a choice. Its not a matter of choice, if a majority of the economy is dominated by people who want to play this form of entertainment, then all other jobs get obsoleted. Chances are for this to work in some sort of legal sense you need applicant screening, health care, and a set of standards or TOS that both the player and the actor must agree to. For the longevity of entertainment like this to exist they need actors to keep in a presentable form."

"Homeless people?
Bag-ladies?
Crack-heads?
Potential suicides?
Terminally-ill pateints?
High school students on a dare?
Teenage girls, looking for sex without taking the blame?"

These three users pretty much summed it perfectly. I have nothing more to add.

I think "yes", there would be people who would sign up for this. That's why Humanz worked so hard to destroy the game. You can't stop people from enrolling in this degrading Society, but you can eliminate this option for the people who hit the bottom, so they wouldn't take it. No option - no takers.

As long as there is this option, no matter how degrading it is, for desperate people, for people who make decisions without thinking it through, that will be an option they might take.

In modern life reality shows are the first step to "Society". People sign up to be monitored 24/7, which includes in the shower, toilet, bedroom, everywhere.
It would surely start with a mild form of "Society": no sexual intercourses or putting the "avatar" in danger. Then it would move to a new level.

And about Second Life. Players don't control actual people's bodies, they control computer-generated models, avatars. So, I don't think it's such an evil to do anything you want to a computer program, don't you?

For any soap opera, Big Brother, X Factor or Get Me Out Of Here junkies, I'd have thought it would be the ultimate!

I once knew a *beep* who, legitimately, shot himself in the head on a dare.
He was high as *beep* but still, he did it.
So yeah...if that retard did that; I can certainly say that the possibility of people joining Society isn't that far off the mark.

THE SIMS Real Life Edition

You know there are people who earn their living by participating in first-time medical tests of new drugs? they get paid for the risk of sideeffects when the test enters human trials (after being successful with animals).
There are A LOT of people who are willing to risk their lives daily to get by. Altrough i can see your point and i would never agree to be one. I would however like to control someone. In fact my dream-game is a virtual copy of a city (preferably world) where you can get to direct control any person (chosen randomly to avoid abuse like entering bill gates and stuff) and play in the world, real physics, real reactions ect. Of course the difference is my dream is a virtual simulation, not real people. and we are still eosn before being able to simulate such game, but one can dream.
