Would anyone be dumb enough to work in 'Society'?

Ok, so you're going to inject nanosh_t into my head that replaces my brain cells, and then some random person who doesn't give a crap about my well-being is going to control me and I'll have tons of random sex with other people (men or women or both or who knows what but you can almost guarantee I won't enjoy it) and get every STD you can imagine (why would my controller care about protection?) ... I'll also most likely be severely injured in the process because the klutz controlling me will run me into a door or fall down a flight of stairs.

Where do I sign up?

Would people really be dumb enough to do this to themselves? Even for money?

I remember reading a long time ago "I wouldn't want to be the first one to beta-test Microsoft bloodstream 1.0" -- referring to nano medicine.

The death row convict bit I could buy, that makes sense.

But not "society." Even though some people do practically live in that world already with Second Life.

It's spelled Raymond Luxury Yacht, but it's pronounced 'Throat-Warbler Mangrove'

The way I tried to rationalize it, all of the people in the "Society" were people who had hit rock bottom in their lives and, at that point, were willing to do anything to make some money. I likened the members of the "society" to modern-day prostitutes, willing to sell their bodies to those willing to pay for the pleasure. If you noticed, during the several close-ups of people's faces, you could see the look of dread, pain, and disgust in the eyes of those being controlled.I do not believe that the people being controlled where as happy with their lifestyle as the program's creator (forgot his name) tried to depict during his on-air interview at the beginning of the film.

Heres the thing, while the job might be atrocious. Some people may not have a choice. Its not a matter of choice, if a majority of the economy is dominated by people who want to play this form of entertainment, then all other jobs get obsoleted. Chances are for this to work in some sort of legal sense you need applicant screening, health care, and a set of standards or TOS that both the player and the actor must agree to. For the longevity of entertainment like this to exist they need actors to keep in a presentable form.

It seems like some controls are maintained for the benefit of the players. One guy got banned for a month, for instance, though we're not told why. There could be stuff for std screening. Also, I didn't see any bad-looking people in the game. Sure the people controlling them were stereotypically fat and weird, but the players don't see them.

You must be independently wealthy OR on welfare. I personally lead a very comfortable life, but to be so incapable of imagining what it would be like to do almost anything to make a living makes your comment ridiculous. I'll bet you can't imagine being a prostitute or a porn actor/actress, but people do it. I bet you can't imagine risking your life or freedom by stealing or being addicted to drugs, but people do it. People do stupid things, and there would be people to work in Society. Hardly a point.

For the same reason that a lot of women are willing to take it up the butt for money, night in, night out -- desperation.

I don't remember if it was made clear in the movie or not, but it seems like you also experience what happens when you're being remote controlled, so some people might do it for the experience -- I don't know, but it seems like there's a lot of sex that goes on in that game and some people might get off on that kind of an experience.

Simple answer is yes. A surprisingly large amount of yes answers.

There are always going to be the adventurous types who like the feeling of being controled :P

Ever watch a movie, and watch some poor actor do something demeaning, degrading, or just down right awful? And you think to yourself, wow, who would allow themselves to be depicted like that? The answer: A lot of people. Tons of them. Everyday in Los Angeles hundreds if not thousands of people compete for single roles no matter how debasing they might be. If someone like Ken Castle paid is employees enough, and maybe even offered them some health benefits, I guarantee you would be able to have try outs from hundreds of people begging to get a part. Its the free market. Just look at American Idol or Survivor or Fear Factor. These people were selected from hundreds of willing participants who were upset that they got beat out for a chance to eat buffalo wang.

Here would be my ad for "Society" to recruit people:

Wanted: Males and female, age 18-30, for interactive gaming experience. Must be fit, adventurous, disease free, willing to undergo non-invasive medical procedure. $35/hour, plus benefits. Submit resume and head shot to: etc. etc. etc.

You really think I wouldn't get any takers?

I figured instead of being dumb, they were just desperate like drug addicts, long term unemployed, 'illegal aliens', prostitutes, and uni students without rich parents lol
though I guess there were too many good looking young white people for that line of reasoning to work...hmmm.
