Did they deserve it?

The middle class yuppies in their 4x4 had it coming. It wasn't their beach, it was the kids', and the kids had every right to be pi**ed-off with the invaders who thought they could just turn up and demand they turn their music down.

It was the yuppie bloke that started all the trouble by confronting them, when all the kids had done was turn up at their favourite place with their bikes and dogs to hang out.

The kids were the locals, the yuppies were the invaders. The escalation was entirely the result of the yuppie trying to show off to his girlfriend by being macho. The moment he touched the volume control was the moment he declared war - which is always a bad idea if you're a) on someone else's territory and b) outnumbered.

5 years on the same argument. I admire your dedication!

It takes no dedication to be on the right side of an argument. I have merely spent five years pointing out others' errors.

Yes, it has been tiresome at time to deal with people having the intellect of a trout, but then there have been the rewards of seeing everyone slowly coming around to proving my point - by voting Trump.

Question to the thread starter: If the movie had been the other way around and the kids had been tortured and murdered, would you say they deserved it for showing up and blasting their music so loud (essentially inviting confrontation)?

The fact that the kids are local means nothing unless they own the lake, which they did not. There are deeper meanings in the film about entitlement and adult/kid interaction, as well as the psychology behind parenting. However, none of these things mean that two people deserve to be murdered for asking a group of rude kids at a lake to turn down their music.

According to the OP's logic, if he went on vacation and asked a group of guys to turn down their radio at beach, i guess he would deserve to get beaten and assaulted by them. After all, he must accept the consequences.

And btw, there is a point to be made that the couple should have been more careful and considered that the situation might escalate. The film makes a case for that, but it does not mean that they "deserved it".
