How Splice Nearly Got Me Banned From My Local Theater

I don't want to ruin this movie for anyone, so if you haven't seen it, please don't read any further.

Alright, let's start with the previews. When previews for Splice hit the airwaves, it was promoted as a sci-fi/horror film about scientists who create a new life form, which the clever writers called "science's newest miracle (is) a mistake." After seeing a handful of trailers, I must admit I was intrigued. Maybe this was going to be like Species with more of a plot or character development to it. Unfortunately, I was wrong.
The actors aside (both of whom I adored in other films, Polley in the Dawn of the Dead remake and Brody as the mentally handicapped guy in The Village), I felt a bit awkward when Dren watched the two protagonists have sex on a filthy labratory couch. Then I had trouble getting past the weird feeling in my gut when Adrian Brodie taught Dren how to dance and she was OBVIOUSLY attracted to him. Also, when his dumb-ass decided it was alright to have sex with this creature (not a clone of his girlfriend, a mixture of animals and humans, so a THING), I had to fight the urge to get up and leave the theater. And finally, during the last twenty minutes of the film, when Dren becomes a male and visciously rapes Sarah Polley's character, I decided I wanted my money back.

As I said, I do not blame any of the actors for this movie's faults. I'd just like to know who the hell saw this schlock-fest and thought it was a decent film. I also read something about the DVD release should have alternate endings. Like what? Dren turns back into a female and rapes Andrien Brody? Come on, how on Earth could anyone want to see this disturbing film again?
After it was FINALLY over (and my girlfriend was nearly sick from the rape scene), we headed for the nearby exit. I couldn't stand the feeling I had in my stomach about what I'd just seen and felt I had to say something. I found one of the girls working the concession stand and politely asked her to locate the manager for me. After a minute, a large man in a nice suit walked up and shook my hand, introducing himself as the manager. I explained to him that I did not enjoy the film but I was not going to demand a refund. I simply wanted to know how the hell this movie got the semi-decent ratings it did and how he felt about it? Apparently I said something wrong because the big guy in the nice suit turned bright red and said, "If you'd rather not come back to this theater, you can continue talking about this movie. Otherwise, please refrain from libling a decent film."
By the way, lible is printed, slander is spoken. Dumb-ass.

Basically, I'd just like to know what happened to the science-fiction (or in this case, somewhat science-fact) movies that used to frightening yet not sickening. Something has gone seriously wrong with our mentality as a nation if we feel it's alright to make movies about creating life, then killing it, then getting raped by it, then killing it again. What does anyone learn from watching this kind of movie?
How NOT to make a movie.

First off, this was not an American movie. This was French Canadian. So your rant about how America can make these movies? Consider it moot.

Second, it's quite amusing how you call the manager a dumbass, going out of your way to hyphenate it, which I've never seen done. You then misspell libel on two occasions, demonstrating that it's not a typo. People in glass houses...

Lastly, your whining. I agree with the numerous other posters that you're just an opinionated little twit who wanted someone else to listen to you complain. That man has to manage an entire theater. If something was wrong with the technical aspects of the movie, ie. sound, picture, etc., contact him. You know, SOMETHING HE HAS CONTROL OVER. You don't like the movie? Great. Discuss it with someone who cares, like your girlfriend.

Think about it this way: you buy a movie from a store. Do you return it because you don't like it? No. You sell it, and learn to rent. You don't go to the store and make some low-paid 20-something listen to your two-bit review.

OP you are an annoying human. if u didnt like the film u didnt like the film, why do you think that that gives you the right to ask for the manager

reply

I just finished watching it again, and I have total respect and admiration for it. It's a really great film for me. Just because it had rape and bestiality doesn't make it a bad movie. Almost every movie nowadays has some kind of rape scene in it. So deal with it.

Fiery the angels fell. Deep thunder rolled around their shores... burning with the fires of Orc.

The manager was probably just annoyed that you actually asked to speak to him because you were disturbed by a film. Sure, he was ruder than he should have been, but I think your actions were more than a little melodramatic. And you actually considered the possibility of asking for your money back because you didn't like it? That is RIDICULOUS.

reply

As for the OP's poem to virtue, this is my answer to you:

I hope you are banned, that if you pull a stunt like you did again that: you are NEVER EVER again allowed in a Cinema or Theater again for the entire duration of your life. This is why people like you cannot travel, cannot engage in intelligent conversations and simply propagate ignorance!! The manager should have called the police! You are badly educated. If you dislike something--walk out. I understand this is what they do in Europe. Double dumb-ass.

So the OP told the manager the movie sucked, so what? Calling it a stunt or making it as if he did more than just ask a question is reaching.

The manager should be damn happy him and his girl friend didn't ask for their money back. To treat him like he just trashed the place is just proof this cinema's customer service sucks and they shouldn't go back there.

reply

No, honey, it's not reaching. It's unacceptable behavior from yet another redneck. You see, when you pay for a movie ticket is the same as when you pay for a theater/art show ticket. The artist (in this case the film director) IS the master of the game. YOU are taking a chance as a spectator. At the risk of repeating myself the 'advisable' behavior, in such a specific case is to walk out the movie theatre--and hopefully shut up!
At best you can "whine" in the local papers or have a discussion with your friends about the show...a bit like intelligent discussion? Otherwise stick to Netflix or iTunes movie rentals. GET IT? He (not him) and his girlfriend should be overwhelmed with happiness that the manager did not kick (his ass off) on the street for asking his money back--come on that's common knowledge: you CANNOT get your money back on a movie ticket...well perhaps they showed you porn on a G-rated movie!!!

As for your second paragraph, imdb-ary, I'm not sure anyone can help you with the syntax, spelling and overall, loss of words...

I'm sure you're very happy in your world of smug elitism where noone is allowed to complain about anything and calling anyone who disagrees with you a redneck is fine. But that just reinforces my view that you lack any decent social skills.

The fact is, the OP didn't like the movie, he told the manager this, and he did it in a polite and non-threatening way. If the manager took this somehow as grounds for banning him from the cinema, he has no business for working in customer service.

Also its not common knowledge, in my local theater you can get a refund if you walk out during the first 15 mins. Not to mention you've no idea where the OP is from, what country he's in or what refund policy his local cinema has.

reply

If you see it as being "smug elitism" it's your problem. However you should be intelligent enough, hopefully, to know that cinema like all works of art are not custom-made to suit the viewer's "morality" or value system (however eccentric it may be). If managers were to reimburse all who disagree or find certain scenes in films objectionable ...it would be a sad day for creative freedom. If you want to speak of the pseudo elite-use a mirror. Yeah, tailor-made films for the overly sensitive...
As for "getting a refund during the first 15 mins. " read the thread again, I never mentioned that. It was another user.
