The film is about evolution (and how crazy some people get, playing god).
The creature was probably meant to portray some kind of genetic-selection/perfection thing, which used every biological trick to reciprocate, so a douse of strong pheromones (probably picked up during the sex-scene in the lab) enabled the creature to spawn.
No idea really, just speculating.
Film is indeed pretty twisted and gut-wrenching, I have the blue-ray, watched it twice (once alone, once again with some friends....I just find the subject-matter and models in this movie so appalling that I cannot watch it without getting a bit nauseous :P )
