I could NOT get past the fact that is was Kristen Stewart.

It really ruined the movie for me. They should have found an unknown or anyone besides her. I kept imagining her curling up to Robert Pattinson and cringing. It is not my job as a viewer to TRY to separate an actress from one role and try to imagine her in another. That's her job, and she fails. Some people have to try too hard to be cool, and this movie/Stewart's performance is the perfect example of it.

Idk. For me, i feel like she plays the same character over and over. She uses the same emotions of EACH and everyone of her characters. The only part of the movie i thought was well- acted in her terms was when she's screaming at Kim. Other than that, ive seen the same persona/ monotoned/ angry role in like 5 of her other films. Im still trying to figure out how she was so "amazing".

Personally, this is the first film I've seen where I've enjoyed KS's performance. I've never seen Twilight, but I didn't like her in Into the Wild or Panic Room... In this film I liked her in and I felt as though she captured the filthy, lightheaded rush of Rock N Roll of that time, the youth and excitement and frenzy of hormones and larger than life desires, the desperation... I'm a longtime fan of The Runaways and Joan in particular, I resisted seeing this film simply because KS was in it. I shouldn't have resisted it, I respect her performance in this now that I've seen it.

Meanwhile purplexdliker... I'm sure you're big enough to accept that people will have differing opinions to yours. Basically, if you need an explanation about why some people liked her performance take all the reasons you DIDN'T like the performance and reverse them. That should about cover it. People see movies differently, they see performances differently. Not that you need me to point that out, I'm sure you already realise it.

Exactly how I feel about her, too.
But I'll admit I did enjoy her in this movie.

Now, Dakota Fanning on the other hand, I thought she was fabulous.
She has always been a terrific actress, and I still cannot believe how old she is now. It really is amazing to have seen her grow up right in front of our eyes & see the different roles she has taken.
I'm excited to see where her career goes, and I know she's going to be one of those child stars who will have no problem transitioning.
The girl can act. No ifs, ands, or buts.

She did a good job but she never had the ability to bring the teenager Joan Jett to life, It was always Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett throughout the whole movie.

On the other hand that's not the case with Fanning, in fact there is no Dakota Fanning in this movie there's only Cherie Currie.

Absolute rubbish!

What you call "cringe worthy awkwardness" I call "adorably shy",

Kristen Stewart sucks, all she can do is play a depressing awkward teen and not even well. The director tends to keep her dialog to a minimum cause she sounds like Arnie in Conan the Barbarian "Duh DuhDuh duh!". Also when it comes to acting she's definitely no Dakota Fanning!

LMFAO! Go back to your play pen, idiot!!

That is very true, thank you... unless you're Kristen Stewart than it's war!

I think Mario Lopez would have played a more believable Joan Jett

That's funny, Joan said her family and long time friends couldn't believe how Kristen nailed what Joan was like back then. Long time Joan fans have been universally impressed and agree that she did Joan justice, even those with personal reservations due to Twilight or whatever.

You are talking thru your ass!

Kristen Stewart definitely nailed the Joan Jett role. I haven't seen the Twilight films but I was shocked to find out it was the same actress from that franchise.

I really felt like I was watching a young Joan Jett on screen.

Gamera is really neat... He is made of mystery meat!

It's interesting that any movie with Kristen Stewart in it brings on these meely-mouthed, mean people to criticize her. I've seen it in every discussion of her films. It is so predictable now that their "critiques" seem meaningless, petty, and almost bullying. There is no substance to their critical analysis, only the same mundane, "I just don't think she can act". No scenes discussed; no lins. Kinda reminds me of people who say, "I hate opera." "Why?" "Because...all of the singing is opera.." "But WHY?" "Because I hate opera." Those sort of people who cannot give an intelligent answer for their personal (sure seems that way) dislike of Stewart make me yawn and look at my watch a lot.

reply

Yeah, I thought she played this part just right. She never tried to overpower Dakota when they were in a scene together. She didn't tried to hog scenes when the whole band was involved. I bought her as Joan Jett and really loved watching them act out the live performances.

I'm working my way through all Kristen Stewart's films at the moment. Just watched this one. I enjoyed it. I was in High School when Joan Jett had hits with ILR&R and Crimson and Clover. I remember cruising in my car (or a friend's) with other kids and having that playing full blast on the stereo. This film brought back memories.

And I remember going to the cinema three or four times with a friend to watch 'Foxes' which starred Cherie Currie alongside Jodie Foster. Man, I had the biggest crush on her in that film (Cherie).

I thought both the actresses were very good in their portrayals.

reply

I don't care much for Kristen Stewart. I think she's annoying, but damn she's hot in this movie. And played the character very well. I didn't get any twilight associations!

Vanessa Hudgens, please become my registered partner

she was so good at the physical performing and the way she stands just like joan jett and how she held the guitar But once she opens her mouth its all was ruined for me. she cant talk like human beings without her weird facial expressions.

reply

I honestly couldnt get past viewing kristen as Bella from twilight as well but for me its because I personally feel like KS acts the same in all her movies with the exception of Panic room and The Cake Eaters. I feel like she is the same actress its just a different title on the marquee. Her voice is really dull and she bites her lips a lot and i never can believe her emotions that she is portraying. I am not saying that she is a bad actress, but for me I just know that if kristen stewart is staring in a movie i kinda go in knowing not to expect much.
Now now now..im not saying your ugly, im just saying your not pretty.

i thought she did a great job as joan jett. i am glad she is opening up as an actress.

oh, i knew her from way back when she started, when she made that lifetime date rate movie. speak, i think it was, and she came off as quiet, then progressed through her films.

that is how i think.

reply

"date rate movie" lolz

Well, I enjoyed the film despite Kristen Stewart.
But yeah, she is an awful actress. She is terrible in Twilight and bad in The Runaways too. She was supposed to play a rockstar, and yet provided a dull, lifeless performance. As you said, she fails.

Boycott movies that involve real animal violence! (and their directors too)

Okay, coming from someone who has read books on young JJ, and listened/seen interviews from the Runaway years, Kristen Stewart failed... again. And so no one says I'm just a blind hater, I will say WHY:

Joan Jett was not merely gritty as a teenager. She was tenacious, silly, and had moments of rowdiness. As a teenager, this girl was writing the music for this band by herself (though Fowley would like us to believe otherwise). The character Kristen Stewart played could not convince me that the character on screen was a driven, inspired person. Kristen Stewart just played up the tough mannerisms and made that the character. No layers. Really, just the same thing she has done in every other film, but with a scratchy voice.

Also, the people who mention the fact that JJ said she liked KS have to realize that it is in the contracts of those affiliated with film to talk up their stars (it is why Meryl Streep told Vanity Fair that she thought Lindsey Lohan was a great actress).

Charlie Kelly: I just want to get black out drunk and relax.

You've been defending Kristen Stewart's acting for 5 years! Hahahahahaha, delusional people sure can bring levity to my day...

reply

Because Twilight was a great movie and it's hard to be a bad actor in that.

Joan isn't exactly a lively manic pixie dream girl type. Hence why an introverted, calm, takes-no-crap girl like Kristen suits her well.

Sadly, Kristen was the only thing that made this film.

I thought she did good. Then again, I don't follow her movies.
