Episode 2: Is this a show for kids?

Like is it actually made for them? That's not a troll or anything like that. Genuinely wondering who the target audience for this actually are.

I thought episode one's writing was off & all that but this one just made that one look good. The writing, the dialogue & voice acting have all been so weak in my opinion.

Not gonna lie, episode 2 genuinely made me cringe & I was legit rolling my eyes throughout.

reply

Well i guess its a cartoon for all the family like the MCU movies are

reply

I was really disappointed with episode 2. The dialog is what got me. It's as if it was written by 3rd graders for an audience of 1st graders.

reply

Right? Like throughout the episode, I was thinking actual experienced writers actually wrote this? Really? Or did they just outsource it to like a 12 year old fan or something. 🤣😂

reply

Haha, well put!

reply

I sort of liked Episode 2 and the only things I didn't like were Thanos being portrayed in a positive way and the voice of the collector. They should have gotten someone closer to how he sounded in the movies.

reply

Benicio del Toro, the actor that portrayed the Collector in the MCU movies, provided the voice for the Collector in "What If...?" episode 2. Most of the cast returned to provide voices (including Josh Brolin for Thanos), with the notable exception that Dave Bautista did not return as the voice of Drax.

reply

Still he didn't sound at all like he did in the movies.

reply

Cause he was talking more. He didn't really do much in GOTG but here was full on hamming it up in villain mode so of course he was different. Korath was a far bigger problem for me than The Collector.

reply

Yeah, Korath went from a sinister badass to an obsequious comic-relief sidekick, right out of a Disney movie.

reply

I thought it was funny how Thanos was portrayed, particularly his joking around about his old plan at the bar and how he held a grudge over the "captain genocide" comment. I thought it was unrealistic that the black order would have overpowered him though.

reply

Episode 2 to me seemed more a spoof rather than a genuine alternate universe possibility.

reply

It genuinely felt like I was watching someone's fan fiction? Like wtf was that?

reply

I've read/watched plenty of fan fiction that was superior to this.

Hell, I've WROTE fan fiction that was better than this.

reply

Someone was actually paid by a major studio to write this. And then someone else actually greenlit it.

reply

It boggles the mind. I want to ask the Pitch Meeting Guy to do this one, but I don't know if even he can do it justice.

reply

It's truly stunning. And on some other sites, the fans are just eating it up with a spoon! It's like Marvel can do no wrong in their eyes. A real "Emperor's New Clothes" situation.

reply

I was genuinely surprised how many people actually praised this episode when I got on social media. They were going wild. It's was genuinely awesome to see/hear Chadwick Boseman as T'challa again but this was not a good episode.

MCU fans like to mock Snyder fans for being "cultists" but as a fan of both Marvel & DC, I can tell ya, they're more or less the same. The fandoms, I mean.

Even if the MCU & Kevin Feige puts out literal shit, the Fans will praise it.

reply

There is a lot of push back from fans on the woke crap that Marvel is pushing. I'm a marvel fan, and I'm just disgusted with a lot of this shit, and more and more.

reply

You mean "manbabies crying" about Captain Marvel. However they spin it, it was still a bland and & forgettable entry in the MCU

The only reason it made a billion is cause it came before the most anticipated movie in probably cinema history, Endgame. But don't let the fans hear that. They get angry whenever I say that

reply

I think you undermine the case by lumping those together. I rate CM as slightly above the median for the MCU, whereas BLACK WIDOW was IMO the worst MCU content yet until this piece of saccharine tripe (the WHAT IF…? episode we are discussing) came along and redefined a new low point.

But certainly doing “what if Captain America, but Black”, then “what if Captain America, but female” followed by “what if Starlord, but Black” is a pretty noticeable pattern.

Still, in those other two cases, they didn’t act like the white guy being replaced was massively inferior. (In fact, one could complain that the “Captain Carter” episode still managed to foreground Steve as the most powerful hero.) Nor did they have every single person Sam or Peggy encountered get down on their knees to worship them, to the point of even having hardcore villains become Dudley Do-Rights just because the non-white-male version of the hero was so goshdarn persuasive. This was far more blatant and ridiculous than anything else they have done.

reply

Black Widow for me was middle of the road. Not bad & not great. Just ok.

But yeah, Episode 2 of What if...? For me is definitely a new low in the MCU in terms of writing. If it wasn't just 20+ minutes long, I would've genuinely turned it off. It was so hard to get through.

reply

This. For the first 10 minutes I was hoping that it's all T'chala's hallucination or something and soon he'd wake up and do something realistic and, hopefully, interesting.

reply

.

reply

I watched it with my 13 year old daughter and we agreed it was too stupid to finish. We stopped when Thanos showed up, as part of the crew.

And I remember watching plenty of crap with her, when she was younger. Just saying "for kids" does not excuse the crap they just served us.

reply

I was rolling my eyes so much, I'm lucky they didn't roll back into my head. 😆

Also, just because something is for kids doesn't mean it should be dumb. That's doesn't excuse bad writing. Read that somewhere before. Don't know who said it or wrote it.

reply

I mean, I think it can be excused for being dumb if it's for really, really little kids. But why would they take the MCU and make it into that? If you're going to do that, you should advertise it as such and give them all teeny bodies and giant heads and call it "Marvel Tots" or something.

reply

Yeah, this one was a big fan wank. The next episode is supposed to be a big murder mystery with the Avengers getting killed and Fury trying to figure it out. That might be good.

reply

This one actually had a pretty good concept. What if Star Lord actually wanted to help people. Like genuinely. And not just a self centered prick who just wanted to get his or get paid. He was a competent hero who saw the good in people.

But after seeing this episode, I still prefer Outlaw Star Lord. He was just more interesting. T'challa as Star Lord seemed interesting but it was just poorly executed

Also, I'm a huge fan of whodunnits. So the next episode sounds like fun. Here's to hoping it delivers

reply

Completely agree! It's not like regular MCU movies are totally adult fare, but they can be appreciated by everyone from adults to teens to older kids. But with this episode, it was like they hired a bunch of writers from "Dora the Explorer" and asked them to make a really sappy, simplistic version of the MCU where T'Challa's awesomeness turns really evil characters like the Ravagers and Thanos into cuddly do-gooders. It was REALLY cringey.

reply

Yeah, it's not like the MCU is "written for intellectuals" or anything like that but in my opinion, The worst MCU movie is better than whatever the f*ck episode 2 was supposed to be

And the critics are going absolutely wild for it. As usual for an MCU project. Actually calling the show "a Masterpiece" & also, "a Triumph in television writing". Can you believe that?

Uh, did I miss something? Did we actually watch the same show?

reply

IKR??

I do notice less chatter about the episode overall than you would expect just for any random MCU show, much less the posthumous return of Chadwick Boseman. I suspect there are a lot of people who saw it and thought “okaaayyyy…that was pretty weird”. They may feel reticent about saying so, but also aren’t quite ready to put on a big show of loving it, and therefore they just say nothing.

I have also seen people say “relax, it’s supposed to be ridiculous”. Is it though? I mean, yes: there was some really goofy humor, no doubt about that. But there were also sappy sentimental moments that don’t read as parody.

reply

Chadwick recorded 4 episodes before his death. Here's to hoping his other appearances are better than whatever the heck episode 2 was supposed to be
