Are black people embarrassed by this movie?

If I was black, I would be embarrassed by how this movie perpetuates the negative stereotypes of black people.

Sure I'm embarassed...but to truly combat this plague we need to eliminate it at the source: Tyler Perry.

That was disgusting. He isn't the source but he perpetuates this stuff more than anybody else. Especially when he still makes movies that gross $30 million their opening weekend.

If blacks produce and own their own movie companies, theyre wouldnt be a number of these films.

reply

Yeah, there are no black people making movies.

I found it embarrassingly bad. All the standard cliches of typical black movies of recent years are in there. Just Ice Cube trying to recreate his Friday formula. The writing was especially bad. I knew it would be bad just from watching the trailer.

As someone who's quick to point out how bad a movie is, I think people are being too hard on this film for the obvious reasons. It's nothing we haven't seen before, but it actually had a nice setup, some funny parts, and a decent message.

Compare this with one of the worst movies I saw last year, "I Love You, Beth Cooper", and you'll see what I mean (Lottery Ticket cost less and made more, BTW).

And let's also be perfectly honest here. Movies with black casts won't be made unless it's made perfectly clear in the script that the characters are "black" and can't possibly be played by any other group of people.

Imagine if they made "Knocked Up" with a black cast. People'd be complaining "it's just a stereotype about a lazy, broke, jobless black man who gets a successful black woman pregnant and won't marry her". When it comes to "black" characters, people seem to see stereotypes a lot easier than they do if the characters were white.

Now imagine if "The Hangover" had an all black cast. I doubt it would've been as successful, even if everything were the same except the color of the actor's skin. Black people on screen automatically alters the perception of the story and characters. If Inception was made with a black cast that did not include Denzel Washington or Will Smith it would have bombed because of this reason.

I was not embarrassed...it had its funny parts but we should be able to have a black comedy without the racist tag being thrown around.

I was not embarrassed. Very funny movie. So what it was set in the projects. Guess what, some black people live in the projects. It doesn't mean it's off limits.
