Wow! I really liked the theatrical release. Even though it's long been unfashionable to hold the opinion, I very much saw it as a female empowerment story in the 3rd wave feminist sense i.e. women owning their sexuality and using it, in this case, as a weapon to their advantage.
That said, the extended cut is ever better! THIS is what should have been released in the theaters and I think it would have done much better with both audiences and critics. I mean, yeah it does spell more out for the audience, but these days that seems to what's needed. :(
If you haven't seen it, check it out.
P.S. and did I mention... even longer fight scenes. This is some of the best fight choreography in film; right up there with The Matrix.
I enjoyed Sucker Punch just fine, but it's hard to imagine a cut that changes it so radically as to make it an entirely different movie. If I get the chance, I'll check it out - I'm sure you're right and it's improved - but this is a popcorn movie. I don't mean that as a knock, I just mean that improvements would either be really, really radically different, or they wouldn't elevate it to a greater plane of artistic brilliance.
It is a really fun movie, though.
I do prefer the fights in The Matrix, but they felt more "relevant", if that makes sense? Neo v. Morpheus in the training program, for instance, shows us the world, Neo's character arc, the relationship he has between himself and Morpheus, and moves the story forward. In Sucker Punch, the fights are more, "We have to get across this battlefield to get the next Macguffin that leads to the ultimate Macguffin. Tally-ho!" I love steampunk World War I trench warfare (plus mechs!) as much as the next chap, of course... Also, Sucker Punch's fights were more effects-driven and "twitchy" (kinetic), and weren't as thrilling to watch (for me) as the Matrix's battles for that reason as well. The sequels are another story.
Yeah, I have the extended cut, and I'm not too sure I agree with OP at all.
But I have to admit, I love the movie, I'm a snyder fanboy, but frankly, when I watch sucker punch, I'm really just waiting for each fantasy-fight sequence.
I don't really care about the story, themes, meaning. I'm just there for the stylized fight choreography punctuated with well-implemented bursts of slow-mo.

I know exactly what you mean. Sucker Punch is a collection of several awesome music videos for awesome remixes of awesome tunes (that White Rabbit!) with some stuff in-between to string it all together.
Oh, they're super-fun fights, they're just twitchy. That's not a problem, per se, it's just not topping stuff like The Matrix or Princess Bride.
