Why were the actual boxing scenes so bad?

For such a HUGE movie with a cast like that, why did they put almost no effort into the fight scenes? im sorry but every punch wahlberg made looked fake and weak. did anyone else notice this?

Like in the final fight, the punch to win it all was just so notasepicasithoughtitwouldbe..

If at first you don't succeed, call it version 1.0

I've read where they were supposedly trying to not make it look like a movie boxing match, like Rocky, but a real match.

To me, it all seemed very choreographed, and I could almost see Wahlbergs lips moving as he is counting: "left jab, dodge, right cross, dodge, punch"

you could tell he was expecting everything coming at him

"To add to the film's realism, Wahlberg refused a stunt double and took real punches during the fight scenes,[8] which resulted in his nearly getting his nose broken a couple of times."

Maybe Wahlberg was just in a daze from getting hit so his own hits weren't so great.

They should have realized that people who actually watch boxing would see this fight. For me the sound effects were laughably over the top for the fight scenes. Were they supposed to be hitting each other with gloves or axes?

Not only did I notice it, I made a thread about it:

What's amazing is some people actually think it was a great boxing scene. Go figure.

haha nice. i didn't see that. so its not the fight-scene choreographer but actually Mark Wahlberg who couldn't make his punches seem realistic?

two words: bull *beep*

I agree with you guys. I watched "The Fighter" yesterday and I also noticed that the boxing scenes looked fake. Sometimes you even see, that he totally missed the other boxer but of course he pretended he got hit.....bad acting, lol :)
Was very disappointed about the whole movie...rated 6/10.

exactly, like full on didn't even touch him. why not just STOP and re-shoot the scene. you'd think this movie would have top level editors and cameramen.. i've seen better fake fight scenes on youtube..

I've only seen it twice but it really bothered me both times how poorly these scenes were done

reply

I think the boxing scenes were good and the final fight great. They're definitely more realistic then most other boxing movie fight scenes.

I agree they weren't great, but I honestly don't really care, all the great stuff about the movie has almost nothing to do with the actual boxing matches, it's all the acting and character stuff.

Wahlberg trained in boxing for 4 years prior to the film. I'm sure he knows something about boxing lol. the fights were great
