I saw this last night with a shadow cast and I just felt like the entire movie was trying too hard to become a cult classic. It was kind of poor. I know there's a lot of die hard fans but someone must agree out there. As a long time fan of Rocky Horror I was excited to see something else with shadow cast and I was pretty let down....
I think they were trying to be original and unique, doing a film that goes against the generic formulaic films that are constantly being churned out... yeah that will fit more into the cult fan base rather than mainstream, but I don't think that was their goal.
It definitely isn't a movie that everyone enjoys, but then that is the same for Rocky Horror, not everyone likes that film, or in fact same could be said for every film.
I was thinking the same thing while I was watching it. I also thought that it must be the first film that ever literally attempted to be a so-bad-it's-good cult classic. So it's unique, in that way. I think it's the beginning of the end, though. The next time someone tries to deliberately make a cult film, movie-watching will officially be ruined forever. Once something becomes a formula, creativity's fvcked.

I'd disagree that the movie is trying to be a 'cult film', more that the fans are trying to make it into what they think a cult film is. The fans are saying "Well, this reminds me of Rocky Horror, so we should treat it like Rocky Horror." and that's definitely not needed. Participation only works with Rocky Horror cause it's a comedy/musical, it's not really horror. But really, being a cult film doesn't mean it's just like Rocky Horror. It is a cult film just because it has a group of insanely devoted fans. There are plenty of cult films that have nothing to do with musicals: Fight Club, Evil Dead, Donnie Darko, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Dune, pretty much any David Lynch film, the list goes on. It's a cult film regardless, the fans just need to stop trying to make it Rocky Horror part 2.
Personally, no. Then again, I'm a HUGE fan, so I guess I could be biased. I don't quite see Repo! as a cult film, per se, just more of an underground film for a select audience that has a high interest in this kind of stuff. I know some people don't like Repo! or feel the same way as you, and that's okay. Everyone has their own taste, just like in music and books and games.
But no, I don't think Repo! is trying to be cult-classic. I think the fans made it that way since Zdunich and Bousman had to promote the film due to lack of promotion by Lionsgate...
How can you tell if a movie is "trying" to be a cult classic? I don't understand the people who keep saying this because they haven't given any examples.
