Lots of guys don't last that long now, either.....you just don't see it on film, and I doubt that they're going to tell you about it.

Only virgins or near virgins.
This was the 1950s...casual sex was not as prevalent. These men were sexually in experienced.

I totally noticed that too!!! I was wondering if it was meant to symbolize something, like April's repressed desires and disappointments...either that, the movie was already too long and they wanted to get the scenes over with quickly...?
shareWhen men are stressed out they don't last long. It's like their bodies are looking for relief and want it quickly.
shareThat was a really interesting detail, I thought.
shareI think Denis Leary talked in one of his stand-ups about it, men didn't used to care about how satisfied their wives were sexually but nowadays we'll go for 4 days to get the orgasm out of her. I figure that's just how it was back then, men had sex just so they could orgasm but it wasn't really about the experience. Nowadays it's more about the journey than the destination, if we can't last long we'll train ourselves and learn to meditate and think of really nasty things when we feel it getting close, or we'll slow down and pretend we're doin it for her but it's really to stop from busting... men have learned a few tricks since the 50's :)

Oh I concur, people just didn't think like that in general back then
shareYeah, but then why would you have sex with your neighbor if you know he probably won't be very interested in your pleasure? I don't intend you to answer me, it's just a thought.
shareYes, I just saw the movie and noticed this too- it's not that men in the 50's weren't able to last longer, they just didn't want to. There was no emphasys on female pleasure, they didn't think it was necessary. I'm sure some men were more open minded and therefore more concerned in pleasuring their women, but that wasn't the case for most couples. I'm not trying to go all feminist on this one. I'm sure women didn't expect it either. They probably didn't even know they could have an orgasm. Anyway, I'm glad I live in the 21th century :D
And on some small level, I think you owe me something for deceiving me so exquisitely.
This thread is so funny! What are you people, like 20 year olds or something who think you just invented sex? Or that this was a documentary about how people lived and had sex in the 1950s? Of course people enjoyed sex in the 1950s. People have enjoyed sex since the beginning of time! Of the two times in the movies, one was a quickie on the kitchen counter and the other time was her trying to find some meaning for her meaningless life by doing it with her neighbor. She wouldn't even kiss him or talk to him when it was finished, for the love of God. It was obvious she only did that because she was bored and wanted some excitement in her sad life.
Humans have been sexual beings since the beginning of time, not just within the past 10 years. And I'm sure men in the 1950s lasted longer than 15 seconds at a time.
And if they didn't and this movie was true, no wonder April was so depressed!
Agreed Sandy....guess you just saw this movie tonight that ended 10 min ago??
shareHaha, this post made me laugh. I noticed that both times and it was very annoying!
shareThey never stopped drinking and smoking no wonder they didn't last long - goes for the women too!
shareThere was nothing odd about the scenes. The first one was just a quickie, it shouldn't have lasted longer and in the second sex scene Shep just got overexcited when he finally got to have sex with the woman of her dreams. Sometimes it's like that, guys come fast, sometimes they last longer. I think the most of the posters in this topic are virgins and think sex in reality is like in porn (blowjob for 5-10 mins, then several positions of intercourse ending with anal and facial ejaculation). It's not.

Even in pornography, they use clever editing to make it seem like it lasts longer.
Its such a repetitive action (just pump, pump, pump). it seems like they are going at it for much longer. But really, its the same 30-60 seconds of sex shot from different angles and the clips are sequenced together into 5+ minutes worth of overall running time.
Most pornography movies really run for 20-30 minutes and half that time is spent on foreplay and other activities outside of the actual intercourse. You're really watching the same time frame of intercourse more than once so it makes it seem like they are banging for awhile but there is probably only 2 minutes (maybe 3 minutes) worth of actual bang time in reality.
So I think this movie is very believable. Especially during a time like the 1950's when they just did it without all the strange foreplay and weird positions.

You lead a boring life, my friend.
I leaned on the wall - the wall leaned away.

I was a kid in the 50's, but I would guess men are a lot more sharing sexually, these days. Can't say I understood much in the 60's, but women became more vocal in the 70's. I assume men just got off in the 50's, and treated women like crap anyway.
Who can answer what I can't - WOMEN. Anyone out there who was an adult in the 50's care to chime in?
I agree with Ace. I think that most men back in the day just werent concerned with their womens sexual pleasure. That and I also think that women werent sexually outspoken. They for the most part didnt realize that it could be pleasureable to them. Women thought it was their duty to their husbands. Now Im not saying that it was true about everyone I am sure that there are exceptions. I do think that it was he norm though.
Pray your life was just a dream, a cut that never heals.
There is another issue here.
Its a theatrical studio movie.
There are censorship issues involved in how long sex scenes can last and how much thrusting can be shown. Not to mention, a lot of our top movie actors don't want to be photographed simulating sex(a very intimate act) for a long amount of time. Better to "get the message across" that sex has taken place, and to end the scene early.
A weird simile is strangulation scenes in movies. Oftimes, the victim is strangled to death in a minute or less(MUCH less). In real life it can take seven minutes or so to strangle a person to death(so says medical crime logs.)
"Movie time isn't real time."
