Mormont girl

If GOT jumped the shark, it was when this girl showed up as the leader of that one clan. Talk about suspending disbelief. You might as well have had a golden retriever as the leader, would have been more believable.

Teenagers and even preadolescent children were often put on the throne in medieval times. In many places a regent, usually a relative, would make decisions in their name until they came of age. Not everywhere though. And it's pretty clear Lyanna Mormont is a child prodigy. Unlike that poor boy who was head of his own house and got crucified by the Night King, she has the mental faculties and the emotional maturity of an adult. Davos was the first to recognize this when he and Jon met her. And he immediately stopped talking to her like a child. Hey, it's a rare thing but it does happen.

reply

Yeah, children had to grow up FAST sometimes, back in the Middle Ages. Which was easier back when some people didn't have to bother with any real education, they could start doing an adult's job or marry as soon as they were physically capable and didn't have to worry about school work.

I wouldn't call Lyanna a "child prodigy", though. She learned the appropriate lordly bluster at a young age from her mother and grandmother, and is speaking for Bear Island before their liege lord, but I doubt she's actually ruling or fighting in battles. There's got to be some responsible adult back at her Hall collecting taxes and budgeting the servants' wages, and anyone who thinks the adults are going to let a little girl with no heir fight get anywhere near an enemy's broadsword, then that person is probably no older than Lyanna.

What exactly are you complaining about? If you're saying she's kind of a poor actress and her scenes are a bit cheezy, then yeah I agree. But if you're saying that a kid being a leader of a house is unrealistic for the show, then you haven't been paying attention, as that is not too unusual for Westeros.

reply

Cheezy, yes. Not to bad of an actress for a kid. Unrealistic? Well, we have dragons, witches, dead guys walking around, and 7 foot tall robots guys. So I guess having a 9 year old "house leader" is really not unrealistic, per these rules. Then again, neither would having a golden retriever run the house. So to answer your question, I think it's the cheese factor that bothers me the most. I can't see how a group of grown men (in a war footing) could possibly take orders from this little girl or let her make important decisions, no matter how well spoken she is or whose daughter she is.

It was not uncommon in the GoT world. Remember the little guy who was sent to bring his people back to Winterfell at the beginning of last week’s episode and who
was found nailed to the wall of his castle and had to be set afire at the end of last week’s episode
? That was Lord Ned Umber, last male heir of that house after the rest died in battle. (Link contains spoilers from Season 8, Episode 1) https://gameofthrones.fandom.com/wiki/Ned_Umber

The same thing happened in the very first season when the Bran had to sit as lord while his father and older brother were away. He was even younger than Lyanna Mormont. https://www.thewrap.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/bran-stark-lord-of-winterfell.jpg

reply

Here's the thing, she commands a house of like 15 soldiers at this point. She's more irrelevant than horse droppings, but because of the positive fan reaction and the hyper-feminist Hollywood landscape, she stays and festers. Great actress though.

reply

Even though it might be realistic to be in charge at that age in medieval times, you're absolutely right about all your points. Even though the actress is talented, I can't stand the character.

reply

Really? I like the character. True, most of her fighters died with Robb Stark and she's got fewer than 60 left. But she's earned the respect of the other northern lords and none of them bat an eyelash when this young kid stands up and speaks in their meetings. In our world she might be in a school for gifted children and attending college classes. Here that intelligence allows her to assume the full duties of leadership effectively.

I couldn't see her lasting long in battle against the white walkers. But if she ends up at the front, that means the front has caught up to them and blocked their retreat. Ned Umber's brief appearance showed he was an ordinary kid trying to fill the role of head of his house. He probably had advisors who were effectively making the decisions. What should I do? Okay let's do that. Whereas Lyanna Mormont's advisors work for her - as advisors, not handlers.

reply

All I know is that they had better do a scene with her and Ser Jorah.

reply

It was a good scene. 😄 I even forgot to look forward to it or realize it could happen.

It kind of felt forced and weird though. Maybe because they didn't show their reuniting and just went straight to that.

reply

I’m glad it was done, but I agree that it could have been done better.

reply

Haha I like the way you put it, agree 100%

reply

I feel like she's an obvious kill for next week, where they remind us "This is Game of Thrones! No one is safe! Again. Now that we're down to our last three episodes."

reply

Unless of course, the writers have been fully 'woke' in which case we will see her standing boldly on a 6 foot pile of wights, hacking away.

reply

Hardly matters, either way I'm sure it'll be good storytelling, and that's the most important part (to me)

reply

she's a great leader, but I'm thinking one more 12 year old girl with a sword isn't gonna slow down the zombies by much.

reply

The bad-ass Mormont girl only exists because this show wants to have a “woke” feminist message ... in response to the social media backlash over the amount of rape and sex scenes it originally had.

Ideally, she dies immediately during battle, but at the rate this show is being written, she probably avenges Jorah’s death by killing a dragon single-handedly.

reply

The whole "Woke" thing is why I strongly suspect that Missandei and Greyworm will end up the big winners of the Game of Thrones. I can even imagine Missandei winding up on the Iron Throne with Greyworm as her Hand/impotent consort.

reply

they already showed Missandei on the throne in the promo posters.

reply

Seriously?

I think Greyworm is the #1 candidate to die in episode 3. I'd say Brienne is slated for death too now that her story arc of knighthood is complete.

The whole "woke" thing doesn't make sense if GRRM had final say on who lives and dies. It would only make sense if he left it up to D&D to decide, which I don't think he would do.
