Why would tourists go to Naples?

I guess Italy heavily depends on tourists. But with the slums, crime and carcinogenic waste why anyone in their right mind visit Campania region?

reply

I just stayed in Naples for a couple if days as a tourist ... I took day trips to Pompeii, sorrento and Positano.

As long as you stay in the touristy centre of Naples, it's fine.

reply

Italy is dangerous only for black tourists because Italians really don' t like blacks and in Italy there are a lot of fascist organizations who hate blacks and molest and beat black people (included black tourists) in the street. For white tourists Italy is not dangerous at all Napoli included, just be careful at pickpockets but no one assault, beat or molest white tourists.

reply

The above is a gross exaggeration. I've never seen any black people beaten in Italy ... there are actually a lot of them in the touristy areas.

Maybe certain areas are unsafe for black people, but those areas are unsafe for tourists of any skin colour.

reply

You don' t live in Italy, you just have been there as a tourist so how can you say you never seen any black people beten over there? My cousin who is black has been beated and molested by a fascist gang while he was on holyday in Italy just because he is black and a black guy who studied at college with me told me that he was molested during his summer holiday in Italy because Italians didn' t like the fact the he is black and his girlfriend is white.
We all know very well that Italians really don' t like blacks, there have been reports of many racist incidents towards blacks in Italy through the years.

reply

ummm ... because I have eyes? Because I've read a newspaper? I've seen and talked to black people in Naples, as well Rome and other parts of Italy? Crime happens to tourists of any skin colour in the unsafe areas. Fascist gangs don't travel around grabbing black tourists the moment they step out of cruise ships.

Stop exaggerating and get a reality check. Also, you think Sophia Loren is a fascist???

So are you calling me a liar? Well there are plenty of black people on internet who said they had a lot of racism problems with Italians in Italy, there is also a site called Rick Steves minority travelers forum or something similar where there are a dozens of black tourists who said they have been molested or bad treated in Italy, go and check by yourself.
Did you ever see an Italian football match, it looks like a Ku Klux Klan parade, with Italian fascist fans making monkey chants to black players and throwing bananas and peanuts at them. Through the years there have been plenty of reports of racist incidents towards black people in Italy and I don' t know which kind of newspapers do you read if you didn' t notice about these racist incidents, the last one happed some days ago, an Italian senator called a black politician woman an orangutan!!!
Sophia Loren is a fascist? Maybe, who knows, her sister was married to Mussolini' s son and she is the aunt of Alessandra Mussolini an important Italian politician of the far right neo fascist Italian political party so who knows if Sofia Loren shares the same racist view, maybe yes maybe not. If you don' t like Italians to be called black haters you must tell them not to be so racist towards blacks.

reply

Yes, it's pretty obvious I'm calling you liar. Plus, there are racist incidents all over the world. You may have noticed one in the US involving a guy called George Zimmerman.

To talk with you is like to talk with a wall, where do you live? in a bubble? Racist incidents against blacks are pretty frequents in Italian football and in everyday life in Italy. And by the way check this out:

That' s a site where black people tell their travelling experiences and read what they say about their travelling experiences in Italy, dear Mr. Know It All.

reply

I don't doubt what you've said, even though I've never been to Italy. The racism against blacks in Italian politics might not be overt, but more so than in the US for sure, and it does seem to bubble right beneath the surface.

What's weird to me is that the racism would be so overt there in spite of Italy being so close to Africa and many southern Italians sharing African blood from their Moorish ancestors. I guess clannish attitudes die hard.

Although I've lived in Canada most of my life, I was born in a town between Rome and Napoli. Having made frequent visits to both cities, this is the only way I can describe it.

My head belongs to Rome, but my heart belongs to Napoli.
