Why would tourists go to Naples?
I guess Italy heavily depends on tourists. But with the slums, crime and carcinogenic waste why anyone in their right mind visit Campania region?

I'm sorry, but whut?
shareOk, ok : I meant
Naples, Italy (not Nepal) where the events occur. Going there seems as dangerous as to Chihuahua, Mexico
Well there is Pompei nearby and that attracts 2500000 people a year
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pompeii but it is falling into disrepair

But is it worth getting shot or mugged? I am heading to Rome this April and will be living in a cheap Hostel near the Medetiranian Sea. I only hope to not get robbed or stolen from... Italy is a dangerous place!
shareI think saying Italy is a dangerous place is like saying the US is a dangerous place. Depends on where you go and how you present yourself.
Also, check your spelling of Mediterranean. You should probably learn to spell places correctly before you visit them.
Major American cities have a lot greater crime rate than any Italian city and mafiosi pose no threat to tourists in general. Actually, not that I'm trying to glorify organized crime in any way, Mafia-like organizations in Italy are very "communal". You get to deal with them if you are born into a "wrong" neighbourhood, you're not so well-off, practice businesses traditionally targeted by Mafia or you have family ties to them in some way.
I've been in Italy twice, once in Rome and once near Turin, and I never saw anything criminal occurring there. My parents however visited several cities, including Naples, when they were InterRail-travelling in their youth (end of 70s) and they told me that in Naples, they actually witnessed some shady guys asking for "protection money" in some local restaurant (my mother knew some Italian). Owner of course paid them and the men left and paid no attention to foreign customers. Why would they have had? They didn't know these foreigners and they weren't part of the system or the community. There was no reason to make a fuzz. Only the restaurateur was there to stay.
The film is about the reality of a certain degraded area of Naples. The center of Naples is very posh. And no, Italy isn't a "dangerous place". Yes, you can have your wallet stolen on the bus... but this can also happen in *Stockholm* (true story).
But I have love in my heart - Yes, as a thief has riches, a usurer money
That's like watching "Rage up in Harlem" and asking why would Tourist go to NY.
The parts shown in the movie are parts of NAples that no tourist or normal Napoleatan would go to anyway.
Like all cities, it has the areas you can go to, and the places best avoided.
I've never been myself, but I've heard from people that have gone that it's a beautiful city, steeped in history, and not everyone there is a drug-dealing murdering gangster - I've heard there people are incredibly proud of their city, and love to have tourists over, to show it off to. I've also heard they're incredibly nice people, always happy to chat.
Just if you go don't go for a scenic stroll through the dangerous parts at night, and don't go wearing all your bling for everyone to see; basically, don't make a target of yourself, keep your wits about you, and you can be rewarded by enjoying a beautiful and culturally rich city. Also italy has the best food ever.

They make cook food well, but if it grows among toxic dumps, I will pass. I'll have to eat imported cans to not poison myself...
shareHah, I'm sure they're food is grown on healthy farms and sourced from places other than the toxic waste dumps - though I would reccomend drinking bottled water.

The good parts of Naples are nice. Pompei is a major tourist attraction, and the touristy parts nearby are actually lovely and definitely worth a visit. chances are you won't get shot if you don't go to the dodgy parts. Same as New York, Same as LA... same as anywhere really.
I wish I could think of something witty to put here... but I can't.
Naples is by far the dirtiest city I've ever been to, it's completely ridiculous lol
shareNaples is a giant slum... don't let the others fool you. Pompeii is not in Naples although it is in the Campagna region. People go to the Campagna region, for the Amalfi Coast, the Island of Capri and Pompeii/Herculaneum. The rest of it is all the hood. It would be like taking a vacation to Detroit. Yea, it's got some cool sights... but really, really?
shareYou'll be safe in Napoli if you don't go looking for trouble. Could you get robbed? Of course, tourists are always a target and that happens all over the world. Italy has poor people just like every other country and often poor people don't care and just take what they want. But as for Napoli, it is sunny, historical, is the home of Napolitano pizza, and well-known, so people go there.
shareUhm then I wonder why anyone in their right mind would visit the US, since half of the world pollution stems from there.
shareThose infamous horror stories mostly come from people who haven't been in Naples at all or who spent less than 24 hours there.
Once you get to know the city a little bit better you can see past its garbage problems and crazy traffic. Naples is actually a beautiful city which has a lot to offer-delicious food, great architecture (there are hundreds of churches and palaces in the old town centre alone) and kind people.
Sure, there are a lot of pickpockets and mafia-related problems there, but if you use common sense and the usual precautions you will leave Naples safe and unharmed. These rules naturally apply to all big cities, not only Naples.
