YOUR 'Brilliant, But Cancelled' List

We've all had tv shows that we've loved that have been yanked off the air for no good reason. What shows would you put on your "Brilliant, But Cancelled" List?

I would include That 80s Show, Freaks and Geeks, and That Was Then on my list.

reply

So many...but to name a few that have not been so long ago...

Tru Calling
American Dreams
October Road
WindFall
Journeyman
Jericho
Moonlight

I'm sure there are many more but those came to my immediate mind.

The Days & Nights Of Molly Dodd from the late 80's would be on the top of my list. Swingtown is a close second if it has in fact, been cancelled.

reply

American Dreams and Moonlight were good. I also liked Dr Quinn:Medicine Woman back in the day. No offense but Freaks and Geeks was dry and boring.

None taken. It just amazes me that anyone can feel that way about something I think was one of the most brilliant, insightful, and real shows ever written. Oh, well -- to each his own. I grew up in the Freaks and Geeks era and BOY did that show get adolescence in the 80s right. And it actually cast (for the most part) people who were and looked like geeky kids.

By cancelled I think he means before it's gotten a chance to prove itself. Dr Quinn: Medicine Woman had a long run.

Cheers!

reply

There were also some good shows on Cable too

Carnivale
Dead like Me
Odyssey 5

After only 1 or 2 seasons. It was especially annoying since Odyssey 5 and Carnivale left us hanging. Grr

reply

yes, american Dreams (called 'My Generation' here ) certainly dropped out of sight suddenly...

reply

2000 Malibu Road (the only Aaron Spelling show I was ever hooked on)
VR.5 (the only sci-fi show I was ever hooked on)

Both ended on cliff-hangers with no resolution. Hated that.

reply

Please don't tell me Swingtown has been cancelled?

My all time favorite show to be cancelled unfairly - MEN IN TREES!!!

reply

As far as lone seasons are concerned, Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared.

But the all time worst cancellation was Arrested Development.

reply

*Arrested Development
*Firefly
*Miracles
*Jericho
*John Doe
*New Amsterdam
*Journeyman
*Moonlight
*Big Shots
*Cashmere Mafia
*Joan of Arcadia

That's all that comes to mind so far.

I totally agree with FullFrontalMessiah

What about My So-Called Life? Don't forget that! And Firefly, too. Sigh. Anything I like gets cancelled, but stuff I despise is on for years and years and years.

reply

I enjoyed the first season of Men in Trees, but it vaguely reminded me of Grey's Anatomy with Alaskan people rather than doctors. *shrug* I loved it while I watched it, but after a while I lost interest.

Came on here to see if people actually liked Swingtown. I watched 2 episodes and was blown away...not by it's utter greatness, but by how wrong the actions of the people were. I know most shows advertise sex, but Swingtown does this in a different way that I can't really word. If it gets canceled I won't mind.

I did, however, really enjoy Moonlight. I thought it had potential. People are complaining about Eleventh Hour. I love it. I hope it keeps airing!

reply

Carnivale
Studio 60
Soap (Sorry, going back a lot, but this one still irks me!)
Moonlight
The Nine
(Those last two weren't "brilliant" but shows I really, really liked and though had a lot of potential.)

How about My So Called Life!

Oh, that's a good one!!!

That was my all time favorite too, didn't even give it a chance. Although, i do have the box set and watch it all the time!!!

reply

ethereal tb - I totally agree with you about Soap! Granted, I wasn't old enough to watch it when it was actually on, but after recording and watching the Get Dirty with Soap Marathon on Comedy Central in 1994, I became hooked. It seems like the series was just dropped...very sad...

I'm SO SO glad all 4 seasons are on dvd

Other shows -

American Gothic
Action
Moonlight (So, so wrong!)
Twin Peaks (Yes, really!)
The Pretender

Not to sound pessimistic but...

Swingtown
Pushing Daisies

Just because I love both of them, they will probably get canceled. See above -

reply

Of shows canceled prematurely within the past ten years, Swingtown and Studio 60 belong in the top 5. Kudos on your mention of the latter.

reply

Journeyman
Firefly
Arrested Development

Star Trek (TOS)

Miracles
John Doe
New Amsterdam
Journeyman!
Moonlight
Cashmere Mafia
Joan of Arcadia

And finally where did all the Saturday morning cartoons go.

But Mortimer Niagra Falls.
It does?
Well let it?

Maybe It's Me

I love mankind. It's the people I can't stand.

reply

Arrested Developement is the worst. I've never laughed harder at a TV than I laughed at that one. It still hurts when I think about it. I also used to love a show called State of Grace that came on ABC Family years ago. It got the boot after one season, I think. You all have mentioned the rest.

reply

No, Pushing Daisies is coming back. IT'S STILL HERE! --dances-

reply

I can't believe no one has said Wonderfalls yet! That and Angel would have to top my list.

Agreed about Arrested Development, though.

reply

My brother loved Wonderfalls and Oliver Bean, neither was on long enough for me to catch but he still bemoans the loss of them.

Don't Make Me Have to Release the Flying Monkeys!

reply

Yes to Wonderfalls! I have it on DVD, and I still cannot believe that it didn't survive! Those who renew shows seem to take issue with shows that make you think. Hence the issue with Swingtown...

Also on my list,

Freaks and Geeks!
Twin Peaks

reply

OH MY GOD! STATE OF GRACE WAS GREAT!!!!! I haven't thought about that show in soooo long. I mean, Frances McDormand narrating, a Jewish girl in a Catholic school in the sixties... how can you lose?

reply

American Dreams...oh, and Jack & Jill (it was on the WB with Amanda Peet, Ivan Sergi, Simon Rex)

reply

"First Monday" It was cancelled in 2002. It's a show about the Supreme Court and the cases it hears and it was really good. The cases and the decisions they had to make really made me think. I wish it would come out on DVD>

Has the L Word been cancelled?

reply

yes, next year is the last season and with only 8 epiodes...

reply

The L Word was never cancelled. The show ended on its own with a series finale which was not satisfying to fans but all the same the show ended on its own.
