Wow this movie sucks

So there's this guy with his son and he wants to stay undetected so he makes a big fire every night.
And he wants to get to the sea so he walks a lot instead of building a raft.
And he's hungry and seriously starved out so he leaves the food shelter behind asap.

And it's quite unclear how damaged earth is. There are dead trees and falling cgi trees but there are obviously still smaller plants standing around. The plot is pretty much non-existent, I guess they were heading just to make it immersive instead. But that also didn't work well, despite the permanent use of a grey filter. There's like a tiny very lowkey conflict going on between the suspicious hardened father and the want-to-trust-people son, but it never affects the story at all.

And basically that's it.
And no I dont believe that any catastrophe, at least none that could have happened in this movie, would kill literally all plants and animals so..

Stick to Michael Bay movies. Much more your speed you dope

reply

Stick to being exposed to critical levels of lead in your childhood.

reply

Building a raft?

Sounds like you really didn't pay attention. This movie deserves more than one watch.

reply

Yes building a raft. Whats wrong with it?

reply

Oh god, you really are that stupid. How could you be critical of this movie and say you didn’t like it when you don’t even understand it? Get lost and stop posting

reply

Calm down now and have another gatorade from your lead cup. Adults are talking.

reply

Is there anything in the movie that suggests they could travel to the coast by raft? Or that they even have access to a raft? I mean, where do you get this idea?

reply

Yea. There's water. There was an ocean, if I remember it correctly there was rain, and they all had water to survive. I have no reason to believe there were no rivers.

And yes, considering you can build a raft from almost anything, such as trees, of which there were plenty, I think he has access to it.

reply

Well, even if it was an option, it's not the point of the story. Do you understand what the story is about?

reply

OP I'm with you that this movie kind of sucked. I think I'd rather watch Hidalgo in Icelandic with no subtitles instead of watching The Road again.

reply

Why did you not like it?

reply

The recurring child with a conscience in the face of dark times theme that kept popping up in the film is a stale, boring trope and the ending where the family that happened to be stalking them for some time actually had a positive agenda seemed like a Deus Ex Machina, cop out excuse for a happy ending. There was also nothing particularly appealing about the movie in general apart from the performance of Viggo Mortensen, who was good as usual.

reply

There was no happy ending. The world was dying. At best, the kid hooking up with the family would allow him to live some kind if life for a while but things are never going to get better, just worse. Anyways, the central point of the story is about the love between the father and son.

reply

It was a happy ending because the father accomplished his goal of seeing his son to safety and the sacrifice of his life to achieve that end was not made in vain. I agree with what you're saying though about the kid not really being safe and it was a part of what made that superficial savior family ending all the more lame. If you took out Viggo Mortensen and put someone like Liam Neeson in the movie but kept everything else the same, imagine how tedious it would have been. Viggo carried the film and it's pretty hollow with the exception of his acting abilities.

reply

Fair enough.

reply

Ok, idiot.

reply

I respect your opinion OP but I love this film, the novel too.
That being said, it’s really difficult for me to watch as it’s such a deeply tragic film, and the feelings it invokes within me are visceral ones to say the least.

reply

I remember reading 'The Scarlet Plague' about 25 years ago and it left a big impression of despair on me... maybe you'd like it or have read it.
Lol but not this one.
Though, I watched the deleted scenes on youtube and with them, this movie would make some more sense.

I agree, the movie could have had more to it. The book has much more impact.
