Felicity Jones was perfect!!

Sadly, I could be her father (but only just) but I have to admit I found her absolutely beguiling in Northanger Abbey as Catherine Morland.

She was the perfect combination of innocence, earnestness, sincerity, and good manners.

She looked wonderful in all her outfits and when she wore a bonnet it helped frame her very pretty face. That top hat thing she wore when horse riding was ugly, though.

For me she made this adaptation work. She contrasted nicely with the manipulative Thorpes and you could easily see why someone like Henry Tilney would be attracted to her.

Altogether, an outstanding performance.

I agree completely. She was the best thing about the movie. and I'm old enough to be her mom. I thought JJ Feild did a pretty good job too. The ending was a little rushed, though. I didn't mind the sexual dream sequences that were added by the director. I realize Austen probably didn't write it that way.

reply

Yes, JJ Field was great. The Catherine and Henry scenes were all quite charming.

The ending was a bit rushed. I wish they could've talked a bit more to wrap things up before the proposal. It was sweet though.

I too didn't mind the dreams. I know they annoy some people but I thought they were kind of funny. Being in the U.S. I've been denied the bathtub scene. PBS morons...

reply

Yes but we can get our revenge and watch it on youtube! We "shant" be denied! (see there I go using those strange words again.)

She was the perfect Catherine Morland, and she was just as sweet as could be. She would do any mother proud.

Really? There is a bathtub scene? Was it raunchy or something? Why did PBS remove it?

reply

I thought she was quite annoying, but I have not read the book. Was she true to the character?
And JJ was very dashing indeed!

It was a "dream sequence." You can watch it at this link (4 mins 29 secs)

PBS didn't remove it. They commissioned the filmmakers to provide them with a version of the program 84 minutes in length (to fit the Masterpiece Classics allotted time slot) and left it up to the filmmakers to decide which scenes to leave out of the PBS version. Perhaps the filmmakers thought the scene wasn't [as] necessary to the overall plot?

Couldn't agree more, she was perfectly casted for the role, so innocent and adorable, I honeslty envy her natural beauty.

reply

I think she was very well cast. She was suppose to be a girl transitioning from childhood to adulthood. She captured the innocense of childhood, while blossoming throughout the film. She has a natural beauty and innocence to her character and she portrayed it really well as Catherine, a girl who let's her imagination run away with her, only to realize that at her age, she shouldn't be believing silly stories.

reply

She was adorable, wasn't she? :) Very pretty too.

Perfectly said Chalice...

I've only read a glimpse into the novel, so i thought i'd take the liberty of watching the film as a "shortcut".

Felicity was perfect for this role, as chalice said; she was suppose to be a girl just entering womanhood, and she does carry that innocent young look.
If it were another actress, it wouldn't have been convincing, and Catherine wouldn't have just seemed young and naive, but plainly stupid.

She is two years older than me, but she looks very young for a 24 year old, more like 16-17.

Very attractive. She carried this movie splendidly.

She portrayed the character really well. It's becoming my favourite Austen series.

reply

Felicity has the sexiest pout ever! Even beating keira's. She was terrific in this and i wish she would do more lead roles.

reply

I agree. I loved the movie as a whole, but Felicity really made it what it was. She was so perfect as Catherine! Sweet, innocent and adorable. I must say, I loved her naughtly little dreams, they were hilarious. Although yes, the end was really rushed. That was my only criticism of this otherwise wonderful adaptation.

I thought the casting in this version was great (particularly the two leads) which is why Andrew Davies' script disappointed me so much. All the wasted potential!

I loved her too. Attractive, kind, sweet natured and imaginative. My kind of woman.
